More XBLA games from id?

It looks like DOOM might not be the last classic id Software game to make its way onto Xbox Live Arcade, with company CEO Todd Hollenshead saying that the reaction to it "bodes well" for others to follow in its wake.

Speaking to Firing Squad recently, Hollenshead admitted that id is "looking at bringing some of the other games to Xbox Live Arcade" but said "a lot is going to depend on the response to DOOM", which has been "fantastic so far" from what Microsoft's told him.

Although id is probably best known for the likes of DOOM and Quake, the company has a back catalogue rich with games that might be appropriate for conversion to Live Arcade, including the likes of Commander Keen, Wolfenstein 3D, Heretic and Hexen, with DOOM II and Final DOOM also potential releases.

Although obviously we're holding out for Dangerous Dave in the Haunted Mansion.

Hollenshead also suggested that, after the Apple-conference-esque surprise launch of DOOM at X06, the developer would probably remain quiet about anything new until it was almost upon us. Sounds good to us - we like surprises.

Xbox 360 granted Good Design Award

A truly international design wins over Japan's judges.

Japan's Good Design Awards are handed out each year to well-designed products across a wide range of industries. Past winners in the game industry have included Nintendo's DS lite and Game Boy micro and Sony's PlayStation 2 and PSP. This year's nominees were examined carefully between June and September and the stylish design of Microsoft's Xbox 360 looks to have caught the eye of the judges.

The machine was designed by Hers Experimental design lab. in Japan, lead by Mr. Chiaki Murata and Astro Studio in the US, under the direction of Microsoft's Jonathan Hayes. From the start of the project to its final design, Microsoft constantly tested the design with users all over the world. With this technique, they have been able to create something that appeals not only to the Japanese consumer, but to people all across the globe. The simple, curved design contrasts starkly with the major processing power inside the machine, and gives a refined look that can be coordinated with any interior. Their words, not ours.

Specific points that appealed to the judges include the concave bodyline, the ability to place the machine both vertically and horizontally, removable faceplate allowing users to decorate the machine to their liking, the combination of wireless controller and ring design, which also acts as a power button and houses the machine's icon, and the comprehensive international design process that allowed it all to happen.

The award ceremony will be held on October 25th.

Downtime for Xbox.com and Xbox Live

We've got some scheduled maintenance coming up and want to let everyone know that both the Xbox Live® service and Xbox.com will be offline and unavailable starting at midnight Pacific Time on Tuesday October 17, 2006 for up to 24 hours. We know you've got some questions, so here are some answers:

Q: Why? Why? Why?

A: Because we're adding some cool stuff. And we have to take the service and website offline in order to do it. We're not doing it to make you mad … really.

Q: What kind of cool stuff?

A: Secret cool stuff that we'll tell you about when we're back online October 18. Other stuff we'll be talking about later in the fall.

Q: Is this a Dashboard update?

A: Nope.

Q: So what's going to happen exactly? What's it going to look like for me?

A: For the first hour or two that Xbox.com and Xbox Live are down, you'll get error messages—when you hit Xbox.com you'll see a Server Not Available message, and if you try to connect to Xbox Live you'll get the "can't connect" message. Don't freak. It's not your account, your computer, your browser, or your ISP. It's us. After a couple hours you will see a "We're down for maintenance" page on Xbox.com and a similar message on your Xbox console.

Q: Twenty-four hours? That's a whole day!

A: Yes it is. It is also 86,400 seconds. Too bad the Xbox Operations Center isn't on Jupiter. A day there is a little less than 10 hours!

Q: What the heck am I going to do for 24 hours if I can't troll the forums, pwn my rivals, download stuff on Marketplace, or video chat with my friends?

A: We're glad you asked. We hereby submit our Top Ten Things to Do on October 17 2006:

Boost your gamerscore. That's right, you can still earn achievements when you're offline. Your achievements will be uploaded to the Xbox Live service when it becomes available.

Bust out your big black buddy original Xbox. There are still awesome games coming out for Xbox®. In fact Destroy All Humans!™ 2 comes out on Tuesday October 17. That's pretty good timing.

Go shopping! We've had a boatload of great games and accessories release in the last few weeks. Check out LEGO® Star Wars II®: The Original Trilogy, Xbox Live Vision Camera, Test Drive® Unlimited, and lots of other great stuff. Make your local retailer very happy.

Nominate a friend for the Gamer Spotlight. TriXie's email will still be working, so drop her a line at [email protected] and tell her who you think needs some attention on Xbox.com.

Listen to Xbox podcasts. Visit Gamertag Radio, XBLRadio, SquadXP, and Unscripted360, just to name a few. We'd suggest Major Nelson's 'cast, but we know everyone's already listened to all of his!

Study up on October 17 history. Here are some examples of momentous events that occurred on 10/17:

1931: Al Capone was convicted of income tax evasion.

1933: Physicist Albert Einstein arrived in the United States as a refugee from Nazi Germany.

1945: Col. Juan Peron staged a coup, becoming absolute ruler of Argentina.

1979: Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Birthdays! October 17 is also the birthday of Rita Hayworth, Evel Knievel, Mike Judge, Eminem, and Superman creator Jerry Siegel! It's a great opportunity to use Xbox 360™ for more than games—watch the Shawshank Redemption, Beavis and Butthead, and Superman: the Movie.

Holiday anyone? Hoist a glass in honor of The United Nations International Day for the Eradication of Poverty (just don't waste any) and Black Poetry Day in the U.S.

Talk to your significant other. Remember them? You last spoke about 11 months ago when you got your Xbox 360 console. Just don't say anything like, "Have you gained weight?"

Make your holiday wish list. HD DVD anyone? How about the Wireless Headset and Wireless Racing Wheel? How about that cool new Zune thingamagig and the cool accessories to go with it? Don't forget Gears of War®, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Double Agent™, and Viva Piñata!

Christmas 07 will be key' - Guillemot

Nintendo and Microsoft set to play "bigger role" this generation

Ubisoft president Yves Guillemot has told GamesIndustry.biz that he believes Christmas 2007 will be an important factor in determining who wins the next-gen console war.

Speaking in an exclusive interview, Guillemot said, "I think next Christmas will really be key. In January 2008, we will have a really good idea of who is going to win in this generation."

Guillemot believes it's too early to predict how market share will be split in the new cycle; however, he did state, "For sure, Nintendo and Microsoft will play a bigger role than in the last cycle."

When asked if he thinks the delayed launch of the PS3 in Europe will cause Sony much difficulty, Guillemot replied: "No - I think Sony has a very strong brand, so if they are capable of coming with enough machines in Europe when they launch, they will be able to sell very well.

"But for sure, it's not good for them to be there this Christmas," he added.

First Annual NBA Live Challenge

You and a friend can jump on xboxlive and compete with a maximum of eight skaters. Lost Planet Collector's Edition 'Bonuses?'

Pre-order the game, get a token to download a map?

Rough day for Capcom, eh? Clover Studios is being dissolved, Dead Rising posted sub-100k NPD figures for Sept., and then a sleuth at NeoGAF alerted users to the existence of a Lost Planet Collector's Edition. EB Games listing the $69.99 Collector's Edition isn't concerning, but the its contents are. According to the listing, the Collector's Edition will include Steelbook Packaging (a tin?), 24-page art manual and a "Token Card to download a new Multiplayer Map on Xbox Live Marketplace."

That map download, Capcom hasn't responded to inquiries, seems to indicate that a map will be available on the XBL Marketplace when the game ships and that if you don't have the map token from the colletor's edition -- you might have to pay for the map separately.

The middle final profit of September of Capcom changes.

Capcom changed to the yen of twice or more 1.6 billion from 700 million yen of the period first expectation (The same period of the previous year was 3.1 billion yen) the final profit of the middle period in September, 2006 on the 12th. Because sales of game software for unredeemable type game machine "Xbox360" of Microsoft of U.S. was good.

Sales are 29.1 billion yen of the period first expectation ratio 13.7% increase(27.8 billion yen). This company puts action game software for Xbox "Dead rising" on the market inside and outside the country in August. The achievement was done as it reached 930,000 at the end of September already and) that not was not disregarded ..pulling (.. was done though 660,000 sales were planned at first in fiscal year 2006.

The game machine for the commercial establishment was unable to move upward, and the performance forecast at full-year was left untouched in the latter six months of the term though the next generation unredeemable type game machine of Nintendo and the Sony computer entertainment appeared, too.

About Halo 3

There is another reason for that. Bungie has been busy showing Halo 3 to a select group of magazine journalists. Not Websites, mind you, but a handful of magazine folks. I've learned this information from two sources outside the Microsoft organization, who confirmed that the publisher plans to ensure that the first juicy details of Halo 3 will hit a handful of magazines by month's end. When asked, no one at Microsoft would touch the subject on the record. Also, EGM hinted in its last issue that it will have something on Halo 3 in its next issue.

So what happened at the event?!!??? Bungie invited game journalists from US and Europe to visit its studio. The developer showed off a quick single-player clip (about 15- to 30-seconds) and then gave those lucky bastards a healthy day of Halo 3 multiplayer gaming on Xbox 360. It's supposed to be excellent, which is no surprise. Bungie is a hell of a developer.

That's the quick and skinny: Bungie teased gamers with a real-time single-player clip; multiplayer is up and running; and the multiplayer is playable at a level that Bungie is comfortable showing to prickly, critical magazine journalists. Nice to hear. Wish I was there.
