When will we get these wonderful toys?

September 18, 2006 - Microsoft hasn't told us how much the Xbox 360's HD-DVD drive will cost, but they do promise it will be the most affordable way to enjoy high definition DVDs this year. Our guess is that we'll see the add-on on shelves in December for about $200.

Microsoft's X360 HD-DVD drive is simple, compact, and well-designed. It attaches via a mini-USB to the X360 which is where all the processing for the drive will happen. This should keep the little drive from generating heat.

Although Microsoft wouldn't plug in the drive and show us it working for this demo, they told us it is going through QA and being sent home for real world testing with various MS employees now.

According to the rep, when it's running the drive makes just about as much noise as something spinning a disk 12 times per second should make. So, maybe it sounds something like your mother trying to vacuum inside a Super Collider? It remains to be heard.

On the back of the drive are two additional USB ports, so the drive will act as a hub rather than just occupy a valuable USB port on your X360. It also features a tab to add the X360 Wireless Network Adapter. The drive sit either horizontally or vertically which should make adding it to your entertainment center incredibly easy.

Right now there is a big question of HDMI connectivity -- an alternative to component connections it's an all-digital audio/video interface capable of transmitting uncompressed streams -- Microsoft said they have nothing to announce, but are considering the possibility.

We pressed this issue and asked if Microsoft is concerned about the fact that the Image Constraint Toke (ICT) component of HDCP/AACS copy-protection won't work over component video connections, which could make the X360 HD-DVD drive useless sometime in the future if the copy-protection scheme is fully implemented in HD-DVDs.

Microsoft replied via email:

"The image constraint token feature of AACS is an optional flag for the [motion picture] studios and several have publicly stated they have no plans to invoke [the copy-protection flags]. Therefore, the copy protection scheme is fully implemented in both HD DVD and Blu-ray today.

"We [Microsoft Corporation] do not see the absence of HDMI/HDCP as an issue over the lifetime of this generation of [the X360] console. HDMI/HDCP is still a very new interface and until it is supported broadly across the CE and PC industries and by consumers on a wide enough scale to be considered a standard, we don't expect anyone to impede content flow over non-HDMI devices (re: invoke the ICT)."

One Microsoft rep told us that "Let us [Microsoft] worry about that. The consumer shouldn't have to worry about that!"

Until we are actually able to plug it in and power it up that's all we know about this handy little peripheral. If you're an X360 owner and want to play HD-DVD movies this winter Microsoft seems to have designed the smartest and cheapest way to do just that.

Bungie talks Halo 3 controls

Bungie's latest weekly update on the development of Halo 3 reveals that the ever-popular Warthog is reaping the benefits of improved Marine AI, while the team is also testing out new control schemes.

Webmaster Frankie encourages you not to leap out of your seats in consternation though - the new control scheme merely addresses complaints Xbox 360 owners had about issue of button-mapping, making more logical use of the left and right bumpers.

Besides, says Frankie, they'll be offering classic options - and even one for left-handed gamers who want to reverse the analogue functionality on the 360 pad before heading into battle.

"But what's this about the Warthog?" I hear someone ask (possibly the builders who've been drilling outside my front door for the past four hours, and whom I deeply hope soon perish in flames).

Well, apparently in the current build it's a bit of a "super-deluxe killing machine" thanks to the way your AI-controlled Marine pals behave.

"First off, beeping the horn seems to bring any nearby Marine running (although they will come based on suitability for the task at hand - more on that in a future update) and hopping straight into the gunner turret."

Although he admits it could be is imagination, Frankie goes on to say that it feels like the gunners are more precise and easier to influence, allowing you to steer their attention toward more relevant targets like big enemies in the foreground.

"This has two effects on the gameplay - one is that it makes the Hog feel more like a weapon when you're driving, and the second is that it makes you want to cruise around bigger battle areas playing mop-up, whereas previously the temptation might have been to get the heck out of dodge. And by heck, I mean hell."

"The AI still has ages of tuning left to go, and the bad news is that if your AI gunner is too good, heʼll be dumbed-down to make the game more balanced. That said, the scale and ferocity of the current encounters (read: more bad guys than ever before) mean that you were going to need more capable AI anyway."

For more on what's happening with Halo 3, which we'll almost certainly learn more about either at the Tokyo Game Show or next week's X06 (our money's on the latter), turn your attention to Bungie.net.

Radiant Silvergun / Ikaruga Sequel Upcoming?

We knew a while back that famed developer, Treasure (of Gunstar Heroes, Sin and Punishment, and Guardian Heroes fame -- plus many others), committed to developing the 2D games that us hardcore gamers have grown to love, but more details are starting to flesh out.

As previously suspected, it is looking like Treasure is developing a new 2D shooter for the XBox 360 to carry on the tradition of it's Treasure siblings Radiant Silvergun and Ikaruga. That is according to top-notch gaming mag, Play Magazine -- a recent issue reads:

"Treasure Shooter

The best for last? Perhaps, friends, perhaps. Right before press time, Treasure dropped a bomb in the form of an "original shooting game" announcement...and that can mean only one thing: RS3. Always planned as a trilogy, the Radiant Silvergun/Ikaruga (known in preproduction as "RS2") series will receive it's final installment on Xbox 360. Watch this space for more information.

Developer: Treasure

Publisher: Undetermined

Release date: Unknown "

racketboy.com member, SegaVega passed this tip on to me and added, "It was written by maybe the most respected game mag writer ever (who now lives in Japan), so you can be sure of it's accuracy. There's no release date yet either, but I'm looking forward to Tokyo Game Show for something more..."

As many people know, Ikaruga was once touted as the sequel to the Saturn masterpiece Radiant Silvergun and went by the code name Project RS2. The gaming media is already proclaiming this new announcement to be the dawn of a "Radiant Silvergun 3". Treasure fanatics also insist that Treasure has intended the Radiant Silvergun line of games to be a trilogy.

The most puzzling thing to me is the choice of the XBox 360 as the platform. The 360 is performing miserably in Japan (where most of Treasure's fanbase lies). However, part of me wonders if this third shooter will be an XBox Live Arcade title instead of a normal retail release. (Of course, another platform port isn't out of the question -- Ikaruga jumped from the Dreamcast to the Gamecube).
