PS3 delay 'not surprising'

Xbox UK boss Neil Thompson has told GamesIndustry.biz that Microsoft is not surprised Sony has "backed away" from its commitment to a global launch for PlayStation 3.

"We know how challenging it is to pull off a global launch, so it's not surprising that Sony has backed away from their previously announced launch plan, due to the unproven technology they are trying to pack in to their console," he said.

Microsoft brought Xbox 360 to market in Europe, Japan and North America late last year, pulling off a simultaneous global launch - although hardware shortages did follow. With the PS3 delayed until March, MS now faces one less competitor this Christmas; but according to Thompson, that will make little difference to the success of Xbox 360.

"Europe remains a priority for us. That is why gamers have been able to experience Xbox 360 from day one, and why we're confident we're going to have a great Christmas - regardless of what competitors are or are not in the market," he stated.

Thompson went on to observe that Xbox 360 owners will have more than 160 software titles to choose from, with the likes of Viva Pinata, Gears of War, Pro Evolution Soccer 6 and FIFA 2007 due out in time for Christmas.

In addition, Thompson continued, Xbox 360 offers "a growing and innovating online gaming service, fantastic entertainment capabilities, optional HD-DVD capability and a great value price".

He concluded, "These factors will help us reach our goal of 10 million consoles sold worldwide by the end of the year."

New 360 Bundle in Japan

It's like getting a 360 for under 200 bucks

Looking at Microsoft Japan's latest offering, first revealed on the pages of this week's Famitsu, and you might find yourself wishing that the Xbox 360 wasn't selling so well on our shores. Starting November 2, Microsoft will be offering Japanese gamers a chance to pick up an Xbox 360 core pack (including the system, a wired controller and component AV cables) bundled with Ninety-Nine Nights and Project Gotham Racing 3, all for 29,800 yen. That's a little over $250, making this one of the best gaming deals since Microsoft Japan practically gave the Xbox away a few years back.

In Japan, there's a deeper story to this announcement. The 360 has, since launch, been available exclusively in premium pack configuration, complete with the hard disk. The Premium pack officially retails for 39,800 yen, but some shops have been discounting it to as low as 29,800 yen in recent weeks.

Coinciding with the 11/2 release of the core pack, Microsoft Japan will release four Xbox 360 peripherals. The 20 Gig hard disk will be available for purchase separately at 9,975 yen. A universal media remote and a wireless headset will be available for, respectively, 3,150 yen and 6,300 yen. Biggest of all is the planned release of Xbox Live Vision, the 360's camera, which will carry a 4,200 yen price point.

Famitsu also hints that Microsoft has some major announcements planned for its pre-TGS press conference, so this budget package could be just the beginning.

Elveon to appear on Xbox 360 and PC only

There has been some confusion surrounding Elveon and whether or not it is a multiplatform title. We can finally confirm the title will not be seen on the PS3.

Elveon is a elven action epic that uses the Unreal Engine 3.0 to produce amazing graphics and animations. Demos have been shown in the past two years, one at E3 2005, and one at Games Convention in Leipzig last month.

PR Manager Marcel Jung confirmed to PS3Land that there are currently no PS3 titles planned or in development.

Elveon will be making its way to PC and Xbox 360.

Multiple gaming sites, including PS3Land, had the game listed as a PS3 title. We hope this clears any misconceptions or confusion surrounding Elveon.

FIFA 07 First Look

Another year, another FIFA title and EA have been quite busy recently with their footie titles. In total they will have created three new football games within a year and the latest instalment FIFA 07 looks set to blow all its predecessors away. EA only revealed that FIFA 07 would be released on the 360 a week ago at the German Games Convention, then came the controversy over whether it would be an Xbox 360 exclusive title or not. Well now 360 Monster takes a first look at the new FIFA title for the Xbox 360.

Now the first feature this new title offers is the fact that not only will you have to control your player but you will also have more control over the ball itself. Unlike previous titles the ball, in a sense will have a mind of its own and wonʼt always need a player to control its animation. The improved ball mechanics also means that using things like step-overs, cruyff turns and nutmegs will not only look awesome, but will also become a necessity, especially in the online world of FIFA 07. Like in previous games the skills will take a good week or two to master, but once you do learn how to use them you will become unstoppable (unless you meet someone else who has mastered the skills).

The next thing about the game is the fact that you wonʼt be able to do a Beckham [Ed - if you donʼt know what I mean by that you need a slap] for example in FIFA 06 on a few occasions gamers were able to quite literally shoot from the half-way line, it would then fly through the goalies hands hit the crossbar and go in. Of course the chances of that actually happening in a football match are about 1 in 18203.35 [Ed - I wonder how we worked that one out] so in the new game you will find that simply shooting at will wonʼt work, instead the game wants you to use your players to cut through the oppositions defence and score. If you donʼt work as a team you will find that the ball will spend more time with some huge drunken fan than at your feet.

Like all FIFA games it is really easy to simply pick up and play with a few mates and no doubt the new title wonʼt lose that aspect. The games new engine means that simply picking up the pad and scoring within 5 minutes will be a thing of the past. You will undoubtedly find that even four minute halves wonʼt be long enough for you to show off your skills and score as putting together passes and taking that perfect shot will be a lot harder than previous titles.

The game will have the star player system like in the recent World Cup title. So if you like to take wild shots from 40 yards the best players to use are the Lampards and Gerrards of the footballing world, if you like skilful players then you will want to use Duff, Cole or Ronaldo. Although nothings been confirmed we are guessing that there will be star players for Speed, Playmaking and Defending and choosing your team will usually end in you choosing the one with the most stars in it [Ed - Chelsea anyone].

Of course we are not forgetting the fact that you will be able to choose just about every football team in existence from Newcastle United to Eredivisie and you will be able to use countless stadiums like Old Trafford, St James Park and the new Emirates Stadium. Then thereʼs the unlockables like classic shirts, footballs, training pitches and other stuff to.

The visuals on the new title look better than the World Cup games and if you compare it to the Xbox version of the game you will see a huge difference in quality. Gone are the days of players looking like polished bowling balls, or pixelated blobs. FIFA might just finally be brinking on the most sacred of titles, ʽnext-genʼ.

One thing to note is that the 360 title wonʼt have the rather cool online interactive league, but do not fret as EA have promised to include some exclusive online features for the 360 version. We also hope that lag wonʼt be as bad as it was in FIFA 06 online.

The new FIFA title will hit store in October and no doubt will be an instant hit with the FIFA crowd. The game itself will be a lot more realistic, look more swish and have tons more features, so maybe it will finally knock PES6 off its perch, although we doubt it. Keep an eye out for the full review of FIFA 07 coming late October.

Rumor Control:Forza 2 backs into 2007?

Source: A Forza Motorsport 2 thread over on the Gaming Age forums.

What we heard: One phrase Xbox-owning racing fans are no strangers to is "Forza Motorsport is delayed." The game was first shown off at E3 2004 and was expected to ship that holiday season. Then it was delayed...and delayed again...and delayed again.

So it likely comes as little surprise that the game's successor is in the rumor mill as also being a victim of delays. Forza Motorsport 2 for the Xbox 360 was scheduled to be released this November, in time for both the holiday rush and the release of the Xbox 360 wireless steering wheel. Now, according to a post over on the forums at Gaming Age, it appears Forza 2 won't hit the streets until 2007.

In a message board thread debating the authenticity and looks of some new screenshots for the game, a poster going by the handle of "chespace" hopped into the mix, confirming that the shots were indeed real. In a subsequent post, he wrote that "Forza 2 will no longer ship in Holiday 2006 -- a new date will be given at X06." He also says the game "is far from finished" and the screenshots are part of a "work-in-progress."

Of course, regulars to the Gaming Age boards know "chespace" as Che Chou, former editor at popular print publication Electronic Gaming Monthly and current community manager for Forza 2.

Announcing the delay of the game on public forums seems like an odd place to do so, and quickly scouring the official Forza 2 forums turns up only a few peeps referencing the post on Gaming Age. Chou may have leaked the info a bit prematurely, as inquiries into Microsoft were stonewalled.

The official story: "Microsoft has not announced anything at this time."--Microsoft spokesperson.

Bogus or not bogus?: Nothing is official yet, but Rumor Control isn't waiting--the game is almost certainly delayed. Not bogus.
