According to Advanced Media Network, anonymous sources claim that developer Silicon Knights has abandoned Unreal Engine 3 for use in Too Human, the company's long-in-development sci-fi adventure title. According to the report, Silicon Knights is finding Epic's next-gen engine isn't performing sufficiently on the Xbox 360. The reports suggest Silicon Knights is now building its own engine for the title. When contacted, Silicon Knights declined to comment on the rumor. As it stands, the company has long said that Too Human is being built using Unreal Engine 3 -- a platform which is quickly becoming ubiquitous for next-generation game development. We'll have more on this story as soon as new details emerge.

Today, via Ritual's website, Project Lead Chris Rhinehart assured fans of Native-American-battles-aliens shooter Prey that they should look forward to a patch and some new content "soon." According to the post, Ritual is working on the 1.1 patch which, among other things, aims to fix various bugs, adds widescreen to menus, and updates the multiplayer browser. Rhinehart also said that Venom, who developed the Xbox 360 version of Prey, is working on a patch, too. In response to player requests for maps that function well as 1v1 maps, Ritual is working on four new maps that will work well for 2-4 players. In addition, the studio is planning six new player characters: Jen, Elhuit, Mother, Becky (a blond victim from the single player campaign), Hunter, and Elite Hunter. The additional content is planned for the PC and X360 versions, but the ETA is no more specific than "very soon."

Pro Evolution Soccer 6 demo?!According to some rumours a playable demo of Pro Evolution Soccer 6 for the Xbox 360 will appear on the Xbox Live Marketplace during the Leipzig Games Convention in Germany (24th-27th August 2006) where it will be shown for the first time on next generation platforms. Other goodies are also planned to be released on the Marketplace as well including videos of upcoming Valve games including Half-Life 2, Team Fortress 2, Half Life Portal and a playable demo of F.E.A.R. Plus even more demos of Test Drive Unlimited and upcoming 'GTA in a jungle' game Just Cause. Other notable games at the Konami booth include Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots for the Playstation 3 It is unkown whether a new trailer or a remastered version of the one seen at E3 06 will be shown to the public. Not only that but there is a Wii press conference planned which will reveal several new details including some never before seen Wii games. This is shaping up to be an important conference. They use the import version, which is already out, and they take the game through its motions. The bottom line, according to them at least, is that the game is definitely Bomberman, and those who have played Bomberman before will certainly notice the difference in the game. The controls are looser and the bomb timings are different. Those who have never played a Bomberman game before though, will likely not even realize anything is "wrong." >Link

Community Arcade Microsoft's announcement that XNA Game Studio Express would put development tools in the hands of anyone with a Windows XP-enabled PC and allow them to develop for both the PC and 360 is indicative of the direction that the company plans to take the Live Arcade space. The eventual goal is provide something Microsoft is referring to as "Community Arcade" (whether the name sticks or not is for branding experts to debate). That community arcade is a space for users to upload games to the Live service and allow other users to download those games. With the upcoming XNA Game Studio Express release, users will be able to connect their PC to their Xbox 360 and port their game to the console to play -- but they won't be able to upload it or transfer it to their friends via the Live network. They will, however, be able to email their game files to friends, or download the game to a memory stick and take it to a friend's house where it can be loaded on to the PC and then ported on to their Xbox 360. Obviously, Internet sites could start appearing where players can download these homebrewed Xbox 360 titles and then port them over to their PC -- Microsoft hopes to see a community grow around the toolset -- but the logistical issues for a "Community Arcade" are still pretty numerous. Who will own the software? If one considers how rigid Microsoft's certification process is right now for Live, how will it change when users are uploading games to that space? What about viruses and potential hacks? What if another platform holder likes what a user is creating on Xbox Live and decides they want to publish the game? Right now, Microsoft doesn't have any answer to these questions; it's just too early. They are focused on at least empowering users to create. They've compared creating videogames to creating music, except in the pre-free XNA world; the barrier to entry was the cost. It'd be like a guitar costing half a million dollars, they said. As a hypothetical ideal, Community Arcade is the right step for a company like Microsoft trying to prove itself as a leader in the industry, but the challenges it faces in this case are numerous. How will they handle them?

Microsoft will launch external HD-DVD drives for its Xbox 360 at a retail price of US$200 by Christmas of this year, and Taiwanese games developers and gaming services providers indicated this this is a smart marketing strategy as compared with Sony's adoption of built-in BD drives for its PlayStation 3 (PS3). External drives have more flexibility than built-in models, the companies pointed out, while adding that despite BD having a much larger storage capacity than HD-DVD, pre-installation of BD drives may decrease the market competitiveness of PS3 units.
