Everyone knows that itʼs good to play together. If youʼre going to do that on your 360, then you will need an extra controller. However you may encounter a problem, perhaps the Official wired 360 controller is beyond your budget at a price of £24.99, but you donʼt believe there to be any decent third party controllers available at a good price.

Looking Good

 

If you live in the U.K. and visited any major gaming store or online retailer, then there is no doubt you would have seen the Joytech 360 controller in their possession.

 

For some reason (which we hope to find out), it has made its way into all the major players and sits pretty on any shelf. Here are the official specs on this one…

 

• Back-lit Xbox 360 Guide Button for instant access to gamer card profile, digital movie music and save libraries.

• Xbox Live enabled.

• New ergonomically designed left and right Shoulder Buttons.

• High Intensity Dual Vibration Feedback.

• Two Analog Pressure Point Triggers and eight way Directional Pad.

• Communicator Headset Input.

• Nine foot break-away Controller Cable.

 

Based on the specs alone, nothing really jumps out at us apart from the reported newly designed left and right shoulder buttons, but itʼs all about how it feels not how it looks on paper.

 

The Original Vs the Contender

 

We figured the best way to see if the Joytech is worth a purchase is to size it up against the tried and tested official controller.

 

Over the next few rounds weʼll give our impressions on who will emerge victorious on a range of aspects.

 

Round 1: Overall Hold

 

From the back, the Joytech adds an extra set of curves. These curves help the controller to fit perfectly into your hands, but this also contributes to a slight downfall – the fit is just a bit too tight and your middle finger will have no room to maneuver which can cause discomfort in long periods of play.

 

 

Despite the official 360 controller not physically taking into account gamerʼs hands, it manages to feel more comfortable overall due in part to a lack of curves.

 

Round 2: The Trigger Buttons

 

The Joytech is more than a clear winner here; they really did re-design the physics of the back trigger buttons for the better. You may ask what exactly makes the trigger buttons so special here?

 

 

Well they actually respond to various degrees of pressure, they are far more solid and can be held down at various points as you wish. The official trigger buttons feel very flimsy in comparison to the Joytech.

 

Round 3: Analog Sticks & Other Buttons

 

The quality of the analog sticks from Joytech is superior. They are less clicky and their material offers more grip which is softer to the touch in comparison to the official. The four main controller buttons on the Joytech are slightly smaller but feel more cushiony to the touch. However the directional pad on the Joytech suffers a little, it does what it says but it does not have the extra plastic covering the eight directions which results in an annoyance. One thing that will take some getting used to is the way that the start and select buttons are placed on the bottom left of the Analog Stick which doesnʼt feel too natural.

 

At last, A Solid Third Party Pad

 

Letʼs get one thing straight, the Joytech Neo SE is different to the original 360 controller. It doesnʼt offer a completely new experience, but the physical hold and dynamics of it take some getting used to if youʼve used the official controller for some time. There can be no real major qualms on this one, it really comes down for personal preference. The main area where both controllers are virtually identical is their build. If youʼre looking for a solidly built, well crafted and a lower priced substitute for the official 360 controllers, then the Joytech should be right up your street!
