No immediate price drop for 360

Rob Rymond, 21st May 2006

Article summary (if available):

Microsoft comment on price drop rumours.

Microsoft has revealed there are no immediate plans to drop the price of the Xbox 360 despite suggestions with the PS3 launch taking place in November, that Microsoft would hit back and drop the price of the console.

Chris Lewis, a representative from Microsoft Europe has replied to a rumour that they would drop the price by $100.

"We have no plans to make any price adjustment. The last couple of days have reinforced the fact that we have a great value proposition, giving consumers choice, thanks to the core system. Weʼre not forcing the consumer down a route with HD playback. We certainly donʼt think itʼs necessary to make any changes to the current price point."

He went on to talk about Microsoft's Live Anywhere and how it will be a huge step forward.

"“Weʼve got quite a lot going on. Itʼs a hugely significant time for us and for gaming in general. We donʼt have any plans to do anything in the handheld space. What we see as important is convergence and what weʼre doing with Live Anywhere presents a huge step forward in terms of being able to experience the games on the device of your choice.”

Halo 3 multiplayer looking good

An update on the Bungie website has revealed that the multiplayer element of Halo 3 is coming along nicely - in fact, they've already started testing it.

"Lars, one of the new(er) multiplayer designers, has a regular multiplayer test in session now - that happens every day - and with surprisingly polished-looking graphics, although I'm told a lot of the textures and decorator objects are just placeholder at the moment. Could have fooled me," the update reads.

And there's good news for those of you who aren't planning to invest in one of those fancy new televisions any time soon - Bungie has been trying out Halo 3 on "old-school 4:3 480i NTSC TV sets, which tells you two things.

"One is that we're making sure this game looks awesome on non-HD sets, and two, that there is always a crazy rush to get to the sets that are HD during those sessions." So good news if you have got a fancy telly too, then

Eidos "Considering" Fear Effect Sequel

The company isn't exactly denying more from the surival-horror series

Yesterday we reported that the Hollywood Reporter reported that Eidos -- reportedly! -- is creating a third Fear Effect game for next-generation systems. The revelation came at the end of a story describing the survival-horror franchise's move to the big screen, possibly courtesy director Stanley Tong.

Today, Eidos offered an official comment on the story, both denying that a third game is actively being created, but offering hope regardless.

"There have been some recent reports that Eidos is developing a third Fear Effect title for next generation consoles," the company said. "Although there is no title currently in development, this is something we are considering at this time and we will update accordingly."

Given that the series will soon become a film, Eidos is almost certainly weighing the advantages of a well-timed game release. Fear Effect fans will have waited a while for more: the last game in the series arrived early in 2001.

Xbox 360 Heading to India

The economy is booming and Indians want to play some games.

Microsoft has announced plans to launch the Xbox 360 in India later this year. Gaming is still a developing industry in the new tech center, and Microsoft is hoping to beat the competition to the table.

India is going through an economic boom, which has increased incomes and spurred spending. As such, people have more money for entertainment, and many Indians are getting a taste for games.

"We see an opportunity to lead and define the market," said Mitch Koch, corporate VP for global retail sales at Microsoft's entertainment and devices division. "We will be in India before our competition has launched in any other market."

Microsoft plans to offer one version of the 360 with a controller and a game for 19,990 rupees ($439). No word, yet, as to whether the system will include a hard drive or if the controller will be wireless.

"It is estimated there are 1.6 million gamers in India who spend at least 2 hours playing everyday," said Mohit Anand, country manager at Microsoft's India entertainment and devices division. "The market, which is coming off a small base, is rapidly increasing as the population is young and tech-savvy."

Microsoft said it hoped to set up 1,200 retail outlets in India's main cities of New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and the tech-hubs of Bangalore, Pune and Hyderabad.

It declined to give sales forecasts for India, but said global Xbox 360 sales were expected to reach 5-5.5 million units by June. The company has stated they plan to ship 10 million units by the time the PlayStation 3 launches in November.

The Xbox 360 is planned to launch in India before the festival of lights, or Diwali, when many companies pay annual bonuses to workers. This year the festival is on October 21.
