E3 2006 Best of Show: Bioshock

Runner-up: Gears of War

Sal 'Sluggo' Accardo, PC Editor-in-Chief: I should kick this off by saying that, even though I'm technically the "PC guy," I also consider myself a student of the shooter genre, and was extremely impressed with what Gears of War is trying to do. Shooters these days are more than just whack-a-mole: Halo's rechargeable armor suit provided a natural ebb and flow to combat; Far Cry, Call of Duty 2 and F.E.A.R. experimented with nonlinear settings, and Gears of War looks like it's being based around the entire concept of cover: pick a path, advance, cover and fire. Rather than most shooters, which are paced like sprints, what I saw of Gears felt like a game of ground acquisition, using all the tools at your disposal to push the enemy back a few steps at a time. I'm not sure I've ever seen a shooter like it, and I can't wait to play it (can I ask for mouse support?).

That said, I was completely captivated with BioShock like no other game at E3 2006. Is it an RPG? Is it an action game? Is it an adventure? BioShock looks like it has a little of everything: a captivating story, beautiful environments to explore, gorgeous graphics, gameplay that crosses multiple genres... it's hard for me to imagine anyone not seeing the haunting images of a protector escorting that little girl through the unique underwater setting of Rapture and not being immediately hooked. Considering Irrational's history with Looking Glass and the System Shock titles, what I saw of the game at E3 this year vaulted it to the top of my wish list.

Bryn Williams, Console Editor-in-Chief: The two stand-out titles of E3 2006 were pretty much voted on here at GameSpy unanimously. I loved and adored what I saw and played of Gears of War for the 360, and even though the gameplay doesn't really revolutionize the action genre, it's still the most promising title I can think of coming to a console. BioShock, on the other hand, is a very different beast. I believe that BioShock will change the way other developers approach adventure/RPG design in the future. Irrational looks like it's going to be able to craft such a deep, immersive gameworld that will make for a completely new level of believability in video games. Both games were impressive in their own rights, and both games deserve the props we're giving them.

Li Kuo, News Editor: I was lucky enough to play Gears of War during E3 and I had a blast doing it. It's a game that has made me glad I own an Xbox 360, but as much as that game impressed me, BioShock impressed me more. I'm a sucker for a good mystery, and storylines don't get much more mysterious than the setting for BioShock. I'm also a sucker for atmosphere, and the underwater ruin of Rapture is a locale unlike any I've seen before in a video game. Topping it all off are graphics that scream "next-generation" and a group of designers that know their stuff (these guys brought us the unforgettable System Shock 2).

Will Tuttle, Senior Console Editor: While both titles really impressed me, I had to give Gears of War a slight edge, mainly because we actually got a chance to play the game (there's something to be said for that). Plus, it features some of the best multiplayer action around, always a bonus for those of us here at "Multiplayer Gaming's Homepage." Still, this is one of those no-lose decisions, as each game has its unique strengths and weaknesses. This is one of the rare occasions in which all of our editors agreed that these were the two best games at the show.

Miguel Lopez, Associate Editor: I was never too hyped about Gears of War, but after seeing it in action, it has a level of tangible brutality that no other game has ever come close to approaching. You feel like you're in danger every second you're exposed. It's brilliant. That said, BioShock just completely floored me. Everything about its setting appeals to me on a very basic level: the world is gorgeous, the aesthetics are brilliantly realized, and there's a level of frightful mystery surrounding it all. From a meat-and-potatoes standpoint, the customizable (and reconfigurable) nature of the main character is just what I look for in this sort of game. As Sterling mentioned, the games are inherently different, but games like Bioshock are what I live for, and ones was well-conceived as this one come along very, very rarely.

Sterling McGarvey, Associate Console Editor: I knew from the moment that the lights went down for Cliffy B's demo at the Microsoft Press Conference that we were in for something special. Within one minute of the presentation, I'd managed to rattle off almost all of the seven words you can't say on TV according to George Carlin. The multiplayer didn't disappoint either, as chainsaws and curb stomps abounded during our demo session. Having said that, a comparison with BioShock is an apples and oranges argument. BioShock is a game I'd play late at night with the surround sound cranked to scare myself. Either way, from the way things are looking, we all win.

Justin Speer, Associate Console Editor: To me, the difference between BioShock and Gears of War is a matter of performance versus potential. On one hand, hands-on multiplayer let us prove to ourselves that Gears felt just as heavy and rugged as it looked. The sense of weight, momentum, and brutality is a real accomplishment that feeds directly into the gameplay -- and we freaking ate it up. BioShock, on the other hand, gave us this short, tantalizing sample that implied an experience with mystery, horror, and untold depth. Maybe Gears of War is closer to a sure thing, but BioShock has the possibility to be even greater than we imagine. Either way, these two were definitely games of the show; even if the game that excites me the most is actually Assassin's Creed. Must be that "potential" thing again.

Allen 'Delsyn' Rausch, Associate PC Editor: If the test of a work of art is the ability to make you feel something, then BioShock is proof that games are edging closer to art all the time. As much as I enjoyed the premise of BioShock and its art-deco look, it was the characters and the animations that really got to me. The Adam Gatherers are truly pathetic creatures, horribly abused little girls twisted into something completely inhuman. Their only friends are the misshapen Protectors, and those moments in the demo when the Gatherer would hide behind the Protector were amazing. When this little thing pulls on the glove of the massive engine of destruction, and it simply sits down and lets her climb all over it, it nearly broke my heart. It's painfully obvious that they love one another in what can only be described as a parent/child relationship, and the simple humanity of their interactions does more to highlight the horror of what's happened to them than all the bloody-mouthed monsters you can think of. If I can get this worked up over a demo, I can't imagine what the real game can do, and that, more than anything else, is why this game was the game of the show. There were plenty of games that looked fun. BioShock may move the state of the art of game making forward.

E3 2006: The Itagaki Interview

....We also followed up on our conversation with Itagaki about the possibility of Ninja Gaiden 2 going to another system other than Xbox 360, which we wrote about, to Itagaki's dismay, last year....

;)

δηλ.

IGN: How are things going? What are you working on these days at Tecmo that you are really excited about?

Itagaki: So I am currently working on a half dozen products, but today I can only talk about one, Dead or Alive Xtreme 2.

IGN: Based on our interview from last year, we spoke with you about a particular game and its sequel. We spoke about whether it would be on the Xbox 360 or not. As a follow up question, we'd like to know what console you're bringing Ninja Gaiden 2 to?

Itagaki: Thanks. I said something and then I created all kinds of commotion. People started speculating about the game with all the worst case scenarios.

IGN: We just wanted to follow up from last year in case there was any miscommunication about the future of Ninja Gaiden 2.

Itagaki: I think that what I can say is that I will never betray my Ninja Gaiden fans. That, I can promise.

<<Ι promise that Ι will NEVER betray my Ninja Gaiden fans..>>
