The Facts and Fiction of 1080p

ASTC standard

Why 720p is better than 1080i in HDTV

But the key to all the discussions is to never forget that we are not looking at a static image, but instead at moving images that create the illusion of motion. For that reason it’s not the resolution of each image that really matters, but the pixels per second we watch - also known as “temporal resolution”.

When you do the math, you see that 1080i60 (and also 1080p30) only delivers 12% more pixels per second than 720p60. This is why most people can’t tell the difference between 1080i and 720p broadcasting - because their eyes and brain are practically seeing the same number of pixels per second.

Another reason why 720 looks better than 1080 in HDTV is because the 1080-line formats that can offer better temporal resolution than 720 are not part of the standard. Although the ATSC includes 1080p formats, they are capped at 24 and 30 frames per second; so there are neither 1080p50 nor 1080p60 variants, which are the only 1080-line formats that will (in practice) surpass 720p60.

Conclusion: 720p is better than 1080i in HDTV because the highest 1080 line formats (1080i60 and 1080p30) as defined in the ATSC standard, deliver only a few more pixels per second than the highest 720p variant (720p60).

1080i delivers a higher quality visual when static images are broadcasted. As soon as you have fast changes in the visuals, 720p look as good or better than 1080i.

Why 1080p HDTVs are so cool

With the creation of flat panel display technologies, which are all progressive, things changed dramatically for interlaced signals. When displays such as LCD, Plasma. LCoS and DLP, receive an interlaced signal, they create a frame buffer by assembling together the two fields into one image (deinterlacing) before displaying the full image onto their screens. This method offers improved quality over CRT televisions, where interlaced signals are displayed on the screen by drawing the odd lines first and then the even lines - using the persistence of the phosphor to have the previously drawn field stay on screen while the next one is being painted.

Now, on a 1080p HDTV, the frames of an interlaced signal, such as 1080i30, will be displayed simultaneously at the display rate of the HDTV.

As a result, you can’t say that 720p is better than 1080i because the display has deinterlaced the image and created a frame buffer so the incoming interlaced signal is displayed as progressive video.

As you can see, the viewer’s display can change the entire 720p vs. 1080i debate and if the viewer is using one of these modern 1080p HDTVs, 1080i then becomes a better format than 720p.

As mentioned on the first page, these 1080p displays upconvert all incoming signals to their 1080p native resolution, but they can not accept a native or compressed 1080p signal.

Luckily, the first 1080p input capable HDTVs are coming and we bring you the lowdown.

1080p input capable HDTVs

1080p and the PlayStation 3, Blu-ray Disc/HD DVD movies

Sony’s claim that 1080p is “true high definition” is ridiculous when you consider the fact that their PlayStation 3 will be able to output a 1080p signal through its two HDMI outputs, yet none of their high-definition televisions, not even the KDS-R60XBR1, can actually accept such a signal.

In fact, only those who acquire an HDTV in the coming years will be able to take advantage of the PlayStation 3’s 1080p capabilities - which won’t excel with games, but more so with the Blu-ray Disc movie playback capabilities.

The back covers of the first HD-DVD titles have revealed that, at least the initial HD-DVD movie

line-up, will be formatted in 1080p.

Eventually, all Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD movies will come in 1080p format and even if they have a 24 frames per second display rate (due to their cinema origins), the fact that they will be in the same resolution as digital cinema truly means we’ll finally enjoy the same sound and video quality of movie theatres at home.

Our advice is that if you are planning on getting a big screen HDTV, then consider one of these new DLP from HP, Samsung or Mitsubishi that can accept a 1080p signal. You’ll thank us in the coming years.

If you already have an HDTV, the fact that you cannot feed it with a 1080p signal is not the end of the world because it will be a few years before 1080p is widely implemented as a mainstream feature.

Reality Blogging: Wunsick aims to Replicate Xbox 360 DVD Firmware Hack

Wunsick of Devo-E has put up a new blog, in which he promises to update on a regular basis on his progress of replicating the DVD firmware hack. Wunsick was involved in the 360 sata, Xtool and 360 rebuild, now he has confident he has the skills and knowledge to take everyone through the process of hacking the Xbox 360 DVD firmware. His blog at DVDHax is already filled with some initial pictures and hype, let's see with what Wunsick can come up with, as we all know theory is one thing but implementation is another.

What is this page you ask? well its a blog/tutorial for hacking the xbox 360 dvd drive. It will consist of a few things, first of all building an adapter to hook this bad boy up…

So throughout the journey we will be building an adapter to hook this baby up, and then using various tools to read and write to the firmware… Stay tuned for the next update… some parts will be ariving, ill take some photos and keep you all posted.

Good luck on your quest WunSick...We'll catch up with his progress in a few days if any. I have spoken to him and he's about as confident as Tommy Gunn was at beating Rocky in their street brawl...but does he (Wunsick) have the skills to match ? Time will tell.

Report: Xbox 360 Production Over One Million a Month by Year End

One of Microsoft's Xbox 360 manufacturing partners, Wistron, is looking to increase its production capacity so that by the end of the year it will be producing at least one million per month. Combine that with Microsoft's other partners, and they'll have way over 1 million shipments each month to combat Sony's PS3.

Considering that Wistron is just one of three Xbox 360 manufacturers, and assuming that it achieves its goal of one million units per month, Microsoft would easily be sending out over a million, if not over 2 million, consoles to retailers across the globe right around the time that Sony sends out its first wave of PlayStation 3 consoles.
