Naruto Attacks on Xbox 360

Ubisoft brings the ninja-in-training exclusively to Microsoft's new console.

April 6, 2006 - Today Ubisoft announced it is developing a game based on the popular Naruto animated series. The title is being created exclusively for the Xbox 360 under an agreement with Viz Media.

Naruto, which features the lesson-packed adventures of a Nine-Tailed Fox demon who is also a ninja-in-training, has gained a frightening level of popularity in Japan. Since its debut in 2002 the Naruto anime series has spawned several videogames and two movies in its home country. Recently, Naruto invaded U.S. soil via the Cartoon Network.

Ubisoft's new game will, of course, expand the presence of the wily ninja-to-be, though for now the company is staying quiet on further details.

"Naruto is a huge hit around the world, and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to develop a game that will bring this exciting character to life," said Ubisoft's Christian Salomon. "Naruto is part of a wave of Japanese manga and anime that appeals to kids and adolescents alike, and we plan to deliver to them every bit of the excitement they have experienced in Naruto's manga, movies and TV shows."

The game is slated for release in 2007.

Chris Lewis, European Manager for Microsofts home and entertainment interview

Chris Lewis, European Manager for Microsofts home and entertainment

products, is the man behind the launch of the games console Xbox

360 in Europe. In an interview with di.se the European Xbox King

talks about his hard-core faith in his own console, the future for

console gaming and the view on the competition.

Just as di.se gets to talk to Chris Lewis, Microsoft - who's become more

and more active on the games market - just announced the acquisition

of the well known British games developer Lionhead Studios.

A company headed by the visionary Peter Molineux with games like

Populous, Black & White, Fable and The Movies under his belt.

Lionhead will report directly to Microsofts games division in the

US and gets to keep its independence. The deal could not have been

struck at a better point in time, Chris Lewis says.

"There is an enormous craving among the consumers for more new,

creative games. We're now making this deal with a company upholding

a supreme reputation. This is huge for us and we will now make sure

they get enough playing space to continue to develop really good

games."

This means another company is absorbed under Microsofts large

umbrella, whose brand now starts to incorporate quite a diverse

range of businesses. This week Microsoft also got appointed to the

world most valuable brand in two different branding studies.

How important is the name and brand Microsoft?

"We've got a very strong brand, there's no doubt to that. But both

Microsoft and Xbox are well known and is now recognized by a large

part of the European population. They are also regarded as much

hotter brands now than a couple of years ago and that is a sign

of us being on the right path", says Chris Lewis.

You took part in the launch of Xbox 360 at the end of 2005. You

talk a lot about sales success, but how well is the console selling

really?

"We're well on our way to become the fastest selling console in the

world in the history ever. After launching the product in 19

countries at the same time end of last year, it is now being sold

in 30 countries. Exactly how many units we've sold to day is

something I cannot tell, but at Microsoft we estimate to have sold

between 4,5 to 5,5 million units by the FYE in June", says Chris

Lewis.

How's it going in Sweden?

"Sweden is an important market for us and so far we have been very

successful there in gaining market shares", Chris Lewis replies

without being willing to specify any sales figures.

And compared to the global estimates you had, how well are you

doing?

"So far it's been over our estimates. We knew that this would be a

big challenge, but are surprised and proud of the big demand for

Xbox 360."

But to begin with you got some headlines due to the month

long shortages and the disability to deliver enough units to the

shops, especially in the US. How do you explain that?

"Before the launch we said that we would sell everything we had,

and we did. Then we got into some shortages of supply, but since

then we increased the production capacity and will gradually

continue this in order to meet demand."

Sales has been slow in some areas though. Business Week described

Xbox 360 as a big failure in Japan. As a comparison, Sony sold 2

million units of its PlayStation 2 when it launched in Japan in

2000.

You've only sold around 123,000 units of the new console in

Japan since its release almost half a year ago. How do you explain

that?

"Japan is a big challenge for us. Just like Europe it is a very

important market for Microsoft, but we still have a lot to do there

and will work extremely hard to conquer Japan too."

This Thursday, Microsoft also announced that they are changing

course in Japan and will start publishing games more fit to the

Japanese consumers likings. 15 new titles will be released during

summer the software giant says, who also recently replaced its Xbox

manager in Japan. The company will also shift to next gear in

regards to its overall publishing rate of games for the Xbox 360,

something it's been criticized for:

"Earlier we have promised to release some 80 titles for Xbox 360 up

till June. During autumn the publishing rate is expected to be

increased", says Chris Lewis.

Sonys new PlayStation 3 has been delayed again and it is now

said not to be released until November. At the same time it

seems like Nintendos Revolution is not hitting the stores right now either.

What does it mean for Microsoft to get this relatively big head

start with the Xbox 360?

"The other day I heard someone call Sonys new console the

DelayStation. Well, jokes aside we've got a huge respect for our

competition and their products. Not to mention how flattered we are

that Sony has picked up our online thinking and I have to say the

Blu-Ray system looks very exciting. But basically we don't care

about when PlayStation 3 is released. We've got our own plans which

we will keep to and will not be distracted by what our competition

does or when they do it."

At the same time you must see that you have a golden opportunity to

gain market shares and trying to catch up on Sonys lead they got

earlier after all?

"Sure, we're not shy on telling that we hope and do everything

possible to win the console market. But in order to do so we have

to focus on developing the content and nothing else. We must find

stuff that suits the different markets. The taste varies between

countries, stuff that sells like hotcakes in Germany might not be

selling at all in Sweden."

What is your general opinion about the rivalry on the console

market between Microsoft and Sony?

"As I see it, it is definitely good for the consumer. We are all

constantly spurred to improve the quality of our games and that is

a good competitive situation."

Whatʼs been Microsofts strategy for the Xbox 360? How did you think

during the development of the console?

"This is a manifestation of the new generation of consoles and our

goals are to prove that we stand for the best content in terms of

graphics, possibilities to personalize the console and so forth.

Microsoft believes we will have a more entertainment oriented

lifestyle in the years to come and that the Xbox will play a

central role in this. An important part of this entertainment focus

is nowadays online and there is where we want to be."

"I think it's a sign of success that more than half of all Xbox 360

users has tried its online capabilities already. The same figure

for the predecessor was just 10%. Furthermore, users has downloaded

more than 10 million objects through our online service and that is

even more than iTunes did during the same period of time."

Speculations and talks abut the new generation of console has been

raving. The hype has been enormous. Do the consumers have to get

used to new updated consoles with a few years interval or will the

development slow down?

"The focus will definitely be on the games and the development of

those in years to come. From Microsofts side we will prioritize to

create new attractive games titles for the market. Consumer demands

this and we have to deliver."

And when it comes to the console itself, how fast will the

development be there?

"I believe we will see a considerably slower development cycle in

this area onwards and instead maybe focus on downloadable upgrades.

My guess is that new consoles will come every fifth to seventh

year, but we as developers have to be flexible and adjust to

customer demands here."

When do you think you will release the third generation of Xbox?

"There is no doubt now that we are a power factor at the console

market and we will of course make use of the huge development

capacity at hand within our company when the time comes. But right

now it is way to early to talk about a time frame for a new version

of the Xbox. Now we will just put down all efforts in winning the

market with the Xbox 360 first."

What is your view of the development of console gaming at large?

What will it look like in 10 years from now?

"Online gaming will be in focus. We are already using the net a

lot today, but that will accelerate more. As I see it, all games in

the future will for bigger or smaller parts be connected to the

net. All the gaming communities on the net is driving this

development."

"I believe that more and more people will start playing games and

that gaming will spread throughout the ages. When it comes to kids

and youths I believe in improved parental security features, where

the parents gets bigger and better possibilities to control their

childrens gaming and make sure they are not subjected to improper

content."

What is your favourite game?

"I play Project Gotham a lot right now. Unfortunately I've got an

eleven year old that keeps beating me all the time, which feels

quite awkward. I try to play all games we release for the Xbox 360

since it is my job to be up to date and I have to be able to

understand how our customers are thinking."

Battlefield 2: Modern Combat - Review

http://reviews.teamxbox.com/xbox-360/1154/Battlefield-2-Modern-Combat/p1/

The Bottom Line

Undoubtedly, Modern Combat gives you a lot to do, between the single-player Campaign, the various Challenges and what will hopefully be durable multiplayer gameplay. The need to spend a lot of time trying to keep your reckless AI soldiers from rushing headlong into the spray of enemy bullets is frustrating, but it’s what sets this arcade-style game from being confused with the hardcore strategy offered by a game such as Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter. That’s not necessarily a black mark for Modern Combat, but if you’re looking for a chess match, you’ll probably be disappointed by what’s instead feels like the kind of war game you played with toy soldiers as a kid in the backyard—lots of bodies flying around willy-nilly and lying face first in the dirt.

Of course, there’s also the fact that, despite the face lift, this is still essentially the same game that came out a few months ago on Xbox. Better looking and sounding, but little fresh in the way of content. That makes it feel more like it was quickly put together for the Xbox 360 user base—a common occurrence when a game system is newly released.

All that makes it hard to recommend for purchase, but it’s truly a matter of personal taste. If you haven’t played any other console version of Modern Combat and/or you’re looking to boost your Gamerscore with some achievements, you may want to add it to your collection. I’d just as soon wait for the next—and not rehashed—Battlefield to show up.
