Build 2469 Release Notes<P> <P>Build 2469 contains changes over 2465 in 4 significant areas:<P> <P>· Networking, Net card drivers, etc., including minor updates to the Home Network wizard and the RAS client connection wizard;<P> <P>· Base/kernel/pnp/power management, including performance, reliability, boot time, app launch, setup, uninstall, and Windows 98/Me upgrades;<P> <P>· Security & DS, mainly the new restrictions on local account login using blank passwords (see below);<P> <P>· Help, management, remote desktop/assistance.<P> <P>Blank Passwords and Local User Accounts<P> <P>Windows XP has a new default security feature that helps protect users with blank passwords from attacks. Users who do not password-protect their accounts can only logon to their account at the Welcome (Winlogon) screen on the physical computer console (monitor, keyboard, mouse physically connected to the computer). This restriction applies to all logon types, not just network logon. For example, you will not be able to use RunAs to run a process as an account with a blank password. This restriction only applies to local user accounts, not to domain user accounts. It also does not affect the Guest account. More detailed technical information on this will be available in a future KB article.<P> <P>Caution: If your computer is not in a physically secured location, you should assign strong passwords to all local user accounts. Failure to do so would allow anyone with physical access to the computer to logon using a user account that does not have a password. This is especially important for portable computers, which should always have strong passwords on all local user accounts.<P> <P> <P>Some additional points:<P> <P>This change will occur on Windows XP Home Edition and Professional, Whistler Server, Whistler Advanced Server, and Whistler Data Center servers, whether joined to domains or as stand-alone systems. Domain controllers will ignore this option, since it doesnt apply to domain accounts. <P>This feature is configurable through Local Security Policy, or through Domain Policy. <P> <P> <P>OTHER RELEASE NOTES FOR THIS BUILD:<P> <P>1. Outlook Express will not be able to get mail from hotmail accounts in this build. This issue will be addressed in future builds <P> <P>2. Existing builds of the VCD utility downloaded from WindowsBeta previous to 4/25/01 may not work once this build is installed and may cause the system to bug check.
