Πάμε στο ζουμί, καμιά καλή πρόταση για dubstep;

DJ Krush (Hideaki Ishii) was born in 1962 in Tokyo. At an early age, Ishii dropped out of school, and joined a local gang, and a few years later, Yakuza. After watching the film ‘Wild Style’ in the early ’80s, he was inspired, bought himself a set of turntables, and began to learn the art of turntablism.

Ακολουθουν προτασεις/mini-reviews, και συνεντευξεις (παλιες, απο το 2000).

Αρχικα το 'μανιφεστο' τους :

Schlabbaduerst-style music making:

1. We dont give a shit about clean sounds, we´re not fucking Toto (ewww...), we´re punk rock!

2. We do care for psychedelic and weird sounds. Strongly.

3. Sometimes we use mastering as a way to destroy the sound even more. We intend to destroy all sonic systems.

4. Sometimes we dont bother to clean the samples. A little extra hiss in the background is just psychedelic. = Yes we are lazy.

5. Bah!

6. Most sounds do have a thought behind, its probably supposed to sound the way it sounds.

7. If you think it doesnt sound right, thats probably what we wanted to achieve.

8. If you think it doesnt sound proper or nice, thats definitely what we wanted to achieve.

9. We dont elaborate, we do what we feel like doing.

10. The lust for destruction can be a creative lust.

11. After destroying, build things up again.

12. Thank you, please come again.

- Ripoff)

Η 6 (κιτρινη) ειναι η μονη που δεν ειναι trance, οπως προειπα ειναι ψυχεδελικο dub/chill/ambient

Artist: Battle Of The Future Buddhas Interview

Date: 02-29-00

By: Anoebis

Q: How, why & when did you guys start to produce music?

A: We started about ten years ago, we borrowed a Roland D-20 from a classmate, then followed up with computer samples and started buying some equipment. We used to make industrial hardcore music, like electronic body music. Thats why our sounds is so heavy. For a long time we only had a Roland W-30 Workstation and a Korg Wavestation and we made some uplifting trance/house. Then we found "goatrance" in late 94 and fell completely in love with the music.

Q: Why do you make Goa-Trance?

A: Well its simply the best dance music around. Used to be better though...We have made all kinds of dance music but we find the 145 bpms the best speed and we simply love the energy. Trance music at its best is unbeatable. We dont consider our music to be pure "goatrance" anymore though...sometimes we simply call it dance music.

Q: How Would you describe Goa music in a few words?

A: Well it used to be powerful, melodic, sexy, psychedelic, over the top, spiraling, fantastic, kicking, harmonic, ugly, thoughtful, inspiring...etc just like the best in life, like a kick, like a rush, this was the feeling in goa in 96-97 but now we are too old hehe (25...) to feel that rush anymore...the only times we get rushes are when we´re staning on a stage and a 1000 people are screaming and dancing like crazy to our music.

Q: Where do you guys get your inspiration?

A: From life, parties, music, movies etc...We dont listen much to trance music nowadays, we mainly get our influences from other kinds of music. We have made some new tracks that sound like industrial disco music...trance music is disco to us really hahaha only more modern...so we sometimes say we make "freak disco music", as well as dance music hehe. But ultimately we get inspiration from the last party we went to and we go down the studio and try to make the sound of the best tracks we heard on the dancefloor...and since we all have been using psychedelics the music always sound weird in our ears, and the music from our studio thus comes out weird too...simple really...What you can hear in our tracks is what we hear on the parties, only if you heard the same tracks we heard in a party it would sound totally different...

Q: What is your favourite track of Battle Of The Future Buddha's?

A: Always the last track we made, if we were happy with it...For now its probably a new track called "Örebro Freak Factory" which is fucking industrial and extremely hard even though it has a melody that, if it was played with a different sound could fit in a commercial track...we always like strong melodies mixed with a lot of noise...Other good tracks that stood out over the years are Filoti, Neuroglider (which is sometimes called Tigerhill, there is a mixup...) Tranceportamental, Leave the World Behind, Domestic Bliss and new ones called Demonoiser and Shining Pigs.

Q: What's your favorite Goa Group ,Album, Top 5 Goa Tracks?

A: Probably Hallucinogen. Its impossible to list any tracks, but good artists are also Juno Reactor, Nick Taylor, Psycho Disco and all the unknown great artists who never got any attention but who made some pretty fantastic music over the years and you never knew who they were...respect.

Q: Is it hard to produce music with 4?? Don't you guys have conflicts when you make music?

A: Lol...(laughing out loud) well we always fight in the studio. But usually it is me (David) or Magnus who makes the most part of the track and then the others fill in whats missing or do a remix or the final mixing or whatever, add bits and pieces, remove something. Our creative process is very chaotic, just like our studio that always is a hell of a mess and sometimes we do nothing but fight and wrestle, drool and make weird noises...its getting better with age though...and we always say what we think, like hey thats shit take that away or I´ll kill you, or hey thats really wicked lets keep that...

Q: What do you think of the Goa-scene at the moment?

A: Completely dead. There is no energy left in the scene, at least not that we have noticed. It has to do with the situation in Sweden I suppose, there used to be lots of clubs back in 95, 96,97 but now the cops are stopping all the good parties, so we have to go underground and make outdoor parties in the summer. They are the best parties so we dont complain but it would be nice to go to clubs in the winter as well. As for the situation in Goa its absolutely boring, we heard this year was the worst ever, but even last year the "goa-spirit" wasnt there anymore, people arent much into strong psychedelic music like ours, they prefer easy standard absolutely boring happy trance. The people that arent into psychedelics call our music "mushroom music" as if there would be something wrong with it!!?? Mushrooms rock...Theres some nice things going on in Greece and Portugal, the scene is more fresh there and more alive. People havent had any bad trips yet so its more filled with energy...

Q: What are your future projects?

A: Well...as a matter of fact no record label is willing to release our music so we have started our own label, called Schlabbaduerst ReKkords and we will release our first compilation CD with only psychotic music from Uppsala, the city we live in in Sweden, with ourselves and various sideprojects with peole like Ka-SoL, Subcouds etc...The first CD will be strong, hard, dark and psychedelic and it will be followed up with another CD that is more morning music, softer and more melodic, but still psychedelic for sure...Then we will make a new full-length CD with only brand new BotfB music and then one with Ka-SoL as well. Check our homepage out in a few weeks and you will find out how to order it :) http://m1.182.telia....010/Buddhas.htm In terms of music, our music is getting more extreme, harder, more industrial and even more psychedelic, and we like to use influences from all kinds of music, like we sampled the old soul-hero Curtis Mayfielf in one track and used it. Sounds like someone is turning on a radio with some completely different music in the background. We will also try to make some electro, jungle, dub and house cause we love all kinds of electronic music thats groovy and danceable.

Thanks a lot from all the Goa people community, and ... give us more great stuff as soon as you can ;-)!!

Thank you Anoebis. Keep dancing.

By: Anoebis

Q: Hello David, here we are again!! )) Schlabbaduerst Rekkords released 3 cd's in the mean time... On which CD did you get the best reactions ?

A: On Schlab 02, cause it has the most melodic and harmonic sound! It is a morning compilation and more easily accessable than the hard stuff of Schlab 01 and 03

Q: Yes, I see... So I guess that compilation sold the most copies, right ?

A: It sure did and we pressed 500 copies of it. It seems now I will be able to sell them all to different shops, many of them online shops, so maybe it will be possible to press more copies and get them distributed. I want the music to come out to the people cause I think we have something here on Schlabbaduerst! Something unique that is...

Q: That's true for sure... So that means you guys will continue with making more morning-trance? Or will you still produce night-stuff like on Schlab 01 and 03 too??

A: Well we already did Schlab 01 and 03 and now we need to continue with the morningmusic. Next compilation, Schlab 04 naturally, will be filled with trancey dawn music, music that just goes on and on, is hypnotic and gives you a good feeling, an expectation of the morning to come. Then we will make Schlab 05 which will be music from the forest, more neutral music.

Q: I think that's great, because we are missing the emotions in the trance-music those days !

A: Yes, I think its really important to bring in as much emotion as is possible! I like to be scared in the night and I like to laugh in the morning. Thats why the night music is so heavy and the morning music is so blissfull. Maybe I am to stuck with this idea, but no one seems to like it anymore among DJs and organizers which is strange...

Q: About tha Schlab 005... You said it will be more neutral... Does that means there are ambient-tracks on it too ?

A: No probably no ambient tracks, but its a good idea! Or we could make a 6th compilation with ambient and come-down music

Q: So, you are planning to make the label bigger and less underground ? Do you have a certain goal ?

A: We will make more morning trance, I for sure will produce more uplifting and good vibe music, music with the good old feeling from 95, but with new sounds hopefully... I dont think I want to make the label less underground, but I want to expand it and get a good distribution. The goal of the label is to make many good compilations and release all the excellent music we have here in Uppsala, Sweden. I was just thinking today about making a full-length Ka-SoL CD because they have SO many *brilliant* tracks. When I DJ 60% of my set is Ka-SoL!

Q: So you are going to make back again the '95 influenced (old-school) trance... Do you think people still love this kind of stuff ?

A: I *know* people still love this kind of stuff! Just check your www.psynews.org forum and there are topics almost daily about the good old sound, but the point is not to make it sound exactly like it did then. I just want the feeling back! One easy way of doing that is to not mix the bassdrum really loud, not have very hard sounds, to include some more melodies, melodies that arent cheesy ...

Q: Yes, there you have a point... Did you never wanted to release minimal stuff on Schlabbaduerst RekKords ?

A: Well I could release minimal stuff if we produced any minimal stuff which we don't. We make maximal on Schlabbaduerst! But some of the tracks on Schlab 04 will be quite monotonous and hypnotic...

Q: Héhé, maximal trance, sounds good !

A: YEAH! I was asked if I played minimal before a gig in New Zeeland on new years eve. No I dont I said, I play Maximal

Q: Will you only release stuff of Upsalla artists on Schlabbaduerst ? Or are there any artists abroad with the same sound as you guys ?

A: There arent many other artists that I know of that share our sound, there are some excellent greek producers, Interstellar Overdrive, Astronomix, Dimo, Schizophrenic Society and a few others that sound a bit like us and I love their work, but I have no contact with them. And we have *so* much music here in Uppsala so its enough for many more compilations, and its fun to work with your friends. Its still a hobby and I hope it will remain that

Q: Ok... Are you planning any label-parties in the future ?

A: Not really because of the party situation in Sweden. We cant make any indoor parties. We make one outdoor party every year and I guess you could call it a label party because most people involved are with Schlabbaduerst!

Q: Explain why it is impossible to do parties indoor? It seems to be a bad police there

A: Yeah, well its the attitude of the swedish politicians and the swedish police that has destroyed a whole scene not just for the trance people but for the techno people as well. The police stop all the parties they can find and its extremely difficult to make a party without them being there harassing people for drugs. Its just a bad situation that force us to go underground. Anti from Spiral Trax has done a good job with the Arvika festival, but it had to end at 3 in the night.

Q: Luckely the forests in Sweden are big enough for underground-parties, right ?

A: Yes the forests are big and nice We make a party with 6 kms to the nearest neighbour and they kind of like it so thats cool. But if you disturb just one person you can count on the cops showing up.

Q: How many people are running Schlabbaduerst RekKords? Or is it just you "playing" alone ?

A: Its basically me thats doing all the planning and all take care of the contacts with different people. Then its Krister from Ka-SoL doing the mastering and he has some ideas as well and contributes with money hehe, and then theres Robin who helped with practical stuff with copying the CDs etc.

Q: So are you DJ-ing more now because of the label? Don't you start to spread the Schlabbaduerst-word around ?

A: I think the Buddhas always had a small group of people who liked our music around the world, we started spreading our music in 96 when we went to Goa and people heard our music and liked it. Then I think it has been gradually growing but very slow which is alright for me. I dont get to DJ more, but I hope to get more gigs in the future. I have DJd some more thanks to friends and Matt at BooM! (who is also a friend hehe)

Q: ok... Héhé, to all the Belgians, he will be here in november if everything turns out ok...

A: Of course it will turn out OK!

Q: You can never be sure, cuz we have stupid authorities too here ! )) Anyway, so what do you think about the mp3/FTP-scene ?

A: Its basically the same as the DAT copying scene that existed before, and still exist but is not as big. People have always been swapping music, now its just on a bigger scale. I dont care if people copy our music as long as they dont try and sell it, that pisses me off. If more people hear our music its better cause maybe we get a live gig or I get a DJ-gig or whatever.

Q: Is all the copying killing Goa-labels, or not ?

A: I'm not the right person to answer that, I dont know much about the sales at the moment... And I dont care much about labels, the individual artists are more important and they have to be payed!

Q: Schlabbaduerst is producing their own style... is there any reason for that? It's clearly made for forests-parties, right ?

A: Yes, the music was always made with the thought that it would be played at an outdoor party, an outdoor party in Sweden, with people in psychedelic states of mind... A party somewhere in the middle of the forest. The forest surrounds us in Sweden and there is a great big lore with trolls and elves living in the forest. We learned everything we know about psychedelic trance on the outdoor forest parties of Örebro. We basically carry on the tradition from Örebro, from the music that was played there, from the vibe that was present there in 97-98 when those parties were the best in the world! So theres this special very psychedelic vibe in the music, and the very sound of the tracks is produced for being played outdoors. Outdoors there are (naturally enough) no walls to make the sound bounce. So you can add more effects, make the sound bigger, the bassdrum doesnt sound killer hard either which makes for a smoother sound, even though our sound is pretty hard admittedly... And there is also the swedish melancolia that gives the melodies a certain eerie harmorny

=Q: I also wondered something, you guys always use lots of Swedish names on your cd's... Maybe it's good to explain some of them!! :o)) For example... What means "Kedves Utasunk"? And that Spanabattl... boogie... :o))

A: Kedves utasunk is hungarian haha! it means "dear passengers" or something like that... But "sunk" means sloppy or slobby (bad) in swedish so it sounds fun haha... and "Spännbälteboogie" means... I dont know...Belt tighten boogie I guess! Its just a weird name, doesnt mean anything! :)

Q: Ok... you guys are crazy...;o) what means Inte Ett Oga Torrt ? or is it also strange, Schlabbaduerst-language ?

A: No it means "not one dry eye". Its referring to the track that very ironically is seen as a very sweet track so when people hear it they will start to cry... NOT!!! :) Oh they played that sweet track and not one eye was left dry hahaha!

Q: Yes, indead, it's extremely harsh... Can you give us some more info about the new Upsalla-artist called Marchaos ?

A: Yeah hes an old friend that I introduced to industrial music when we were teens and he introduced me to death and trash metal so we share the same musical background and he started making music a few years ago and he doesnt have any limitations and has a really fresh way of looking at music, trance music that is very maximal stuff indeed! :)

Q: So you have death and Trash-metal influences... so why aren't there any guitars in the tracks ?

A: Because most guitar sounds really sound dry and boring when you sample them! Its just repetetive and very boring. But maybe if a live guitarist would play something it would be different. We have one track called "Carmageddon" which has guitars, and its heavy, but a bit boring :)

Ok, thank you David for the interview and we hope to hear more Schlabbaduerst stuff soon! Bom

Ok thanks, you will hear more from Schlabbaduerst soon for sure! :) BOM!

Q: Hey David and thanks for doing this interview... First of all... Why did you start with your own label called Schlabbaduerst ReKkords??

A: Well since our latest release on BooM! Records we had no releases for awhile. We were rejected by some labels because our sound was too heavy. So we decided to release something on our own. People had been asking for music and we had none to offer, but now we do. And we felt we had a lot of good music that we wanted people to hear! * We are having a new release soon on BooM! Records though, Scandosound 2, its gonna be great I think. And a reason to release our own music is to hopefully get a major label interested.

Q: Can you give us a brief history about your label??

A: Well we started planning last year and went through mastering in the winter and starting selling the CD on the internet a few months ago. It has been great so far, we have reached quite a number of new people that have been positively surprised when they heard the music. So after a year now things are rolling and its good fun

Q: What kind of music do you release on the label??

A: Swedish music only, or rather music from our hometown Uppsala only. We have a certain sound here that we want to promote. We were »raised» in the parties in Örebro in Sweden. They were run by Örebro Underground, a few guys who has been to Goa since 88-89. They know how to make a good psychedelic party and there is always a clear distinction of night and morning music. Thats where we learned everything we know about psychedelic trance and after a while the DJs in Örebro played our music which was great. Most people call our music dark, as in the case of Schlab 001 this is probably true, but we also know the importance of morning music, in fact there can be no morning without night and vice versa. They are equally important, and thats why we released Schlab 002. The thought behind the music is the classic psychedelic trance theme, the journey from night to day, from darkness to light. It has to end in a positive way or its not worth anything. We feel that this kind of feeling has been lost in trance music lately, and we listen to old records such as First Flight from Flying Rhino and realise this music isnt made anymore. Its very hard, very techno, very little strong melodies nowadays. Check »Mr. Fantastic» on Schlab 002 (it can be downloaded from mp3.com/Battlebuddhas for free) it is classic morning music the way its supposed to be.

Q: Just because of curiosity... What means "Schlabbaduerst"??

A: Nothing....it is just a weird sound in swedish that doesnt mean anything. It's a power noice word though, like »blam», »slam», »slabbadam» »schlabbaduerst»… I hope this makes sense… :) Its onomatopoetic. Its the same with »jadoorst», looks a bit dutch * but doesnt mean anything. Ka-SoL is calling their studio Dungeon Jadoorst sometimes…its just a game of words and sounds.

Q: Your label is still véry underground, do you want to change that or do you want to keep it there??

A: No, we want to expand. Considering how well the 2 compilations were received and considering we only made a few copies to start with we would like to distribute the CDs to some major distributor. We´re making 500 copies of Schlab 002 right now and I think we can sell them all if we get a good distributor. I think we could probably sell 5000 copies if we were a famous label…

Q: How were the selling of your first release? And what are the expected sellings of the second Schlabbaduerst-release??

A: We sold about 50 copies so far of Schlab 001 and about 30 of Schlab 002, and the goal was to sell 100 copies for both compilations through the website. When we sell it through our website we get all the cash ourselves, if we sell to shops we dont get so much. But we expect to sell the 500 copies of Schlab 002 if we give it away for distributing. Its much more fun selling through the website cause you get personal contact with everyone ordering the CDs.

Q: Did you already had a label-party or do you have plans in that direction??

A: Not really considering that the club-scene in Sweden is really down, bad and struggling at the moment. We had a nice outdoor party in july, but it wasnt like a label-party. But there was a hell of a lot of Uppsala-music played though. Our parties are free parties. They dont cost much and its not much organising but it's a lot of planning and contacting people so we make one each year, we are too lazy to make more and as soon as we try to make an indoor party the cops would try and stop it.

Q: What else can we expect from Schlabbaduerst in the future??

A: There will be a 3rd, red compilation with "horrormusic". Some industrial stuff and some great stuff from a guy from Uppsala called Marchaos. Also some new hard Buddha-tracks that kick ass, and some more Church of the Dead Dog that are really industrial. The Marchaos tracks always work really well with the crowd and people are having fun at the silly »horror» samples from the movie Evil Dead 2. * And after that there will probably be a 4th blue compilation with "dawn-music", more stuff in between night and morning, some excellent stuff from Lulle in Ka-SoL. That will be soft but monotonous yet melodic music, really trancey stuff. Music that just goes on forever and you dont wish it should stop. I think we will wait with releasing any full-length CDs from Buddhas and Ka-SoL to see if we can get some more copies printed of the other compilations first. We want to make good covers then and that costs a lot. The red compilation could possibly be released in the beginning of next year and the blue a few months after that.
