Take-Two Eyes Wii

The company considers bringing some of its 2K and 2K Sports titles to Nintendo's new generation console.

In a conference call held today, Take-Two president and CEO Paul Eibeler indicated that the company would support Nintendo's new generation Wii console in the future. The executive said that after a strong showing at the Electronics Entertainment Expo 2006, Wii could be a potentially viable platform for Take-Two, which has historically shied away from Nintendo support.

"The positive for us is that we haven't been a big player on the Nintendo platform. The reception that [Wii] received at the E3 show is one that makes us take a real strong look at it," Eibeler said. "As we grow our sports business, there are opportunities with our sports games to extend them to the Wii system, particularly if you look at baseball, where we have an exclusive arrangement, as well as some of the other sports games that would play extremely well on the Wii product."

Eibeler also noted: "And some of the 2K products have an opportunity on the Wii. It's really a late '07, '08 opportunity for us, but it presents an additional revenue stream that we didn't have before."

Take-Two's 2K Sports lineup includes Major League Baseball 2K, NBA 2K, NHL 2K and - a series that seems perfectly suited for Wii - Top Spin. On the 2K side, offerings include titles such as Prey, BioShock, Dungeon Siege, Family Guy and CivCity: Rome.

Conspicuously absent from Take-Two's announced Wii support were games from its Rockstar Games branch, which makes the hugely popular Grand Theft Auto series. Rockstar recently released another title that many hoped would eventually come to Wii: Table Tennis.

More as it develops.

Wii Before PS3

Sources say Nintendo to launch its new generation console before rival Sony does PS3.

At the Electronics Entertainment Expo 2006 last May in Los Angeles, Sony announced that its forthcoming PlayStation 3 console would debut worldwide on November 17 of this year. The company also revealed the console's two price points. Nintendo, on the other hand, was much vaguer about its new generation Wii console, choosing only to say that it would be less expensive than competitors and would arrive around the globe sometime in the "fourth quarter."

Despite what the Big N has said publicly, publishers and developers have prepping many of their Wii titles for an October release. This in of itself is not proof that Wii will also debut in October, but the data certainly doesn't conflict with the argument.

On top of everything else, this week industry sources have relayed that - in something of a surprise attack -- "Nintendo is planning to launch Wii before PlayStation 3." The latest word jives with publisher release calendars, whose Wii titles are scheduled in many cases for a mid-to-late October debut or, in some cases, very early November.

Unsubstantiated rumors around the Web have further suggested that Wii could debut on November 6 of this year. IGN Wii is unable to validate these reports.

Whether Wii launches in October or in early November, it seems clear that the system is on track to debut earlier than expected, and if the latest reports are to be believed, in advance of rival Sony's PlayStation 3. A two-to-three week headstart on PS3 could give the significantly cheaper Wii an even greater advantage.

Nintendo Wii's Secret Port Opened - SD Slot & Mystery Socket...

dot_clear.gif

According to reports a large number of games development houses received an E3 CD from Nintendo which places a huge focus on the Wii. The cover of the CD shown an image with the 'secret' Wii slot open, revealing what seems to be a SD slot, perhaps adding further weight to the rumour of Nintendo manufacturing their own SD cards. While this SD slot seems to be fairly visible, what is on top of it seems to open for debate...

A few companies received an E3 CD from Nintendo with some info about Wii. On the cover of the CD is a Wii console with one of the secret slots open. Itʼs a very vague picture but it looks like there is an SD Card Reader behind the flap and something that looks like an eye. There were gossips that Wii would get a built in camera so who knows…

-Inexpensive graphics development.

-Developer-friendly “camera” program

-Will support HDR lighting, normal maps, bump-mapping, nurbs rendering, and panoramically-composted depth-composited cubemappng, ray-tracing.

-Chipsets are very inexpensive although EXTREMELY powerful, WILL incorporate many aspects of the Project Reality study.

-Nintendo is providing extensive documentation to ease the incorporation of the Wii-mote.

-Wii will include a built-in decent resolution camera that can be used to add your face to character models and add innovation to games. These snapshots can be tweaked as well. It is still being decided whether to allow camera to record and stream video. Mention made to have this feature be a strong feature in online play.

-A wireless headset will be made available at launch.

-SD cards will range from 2GB to 7GB and will be priced “within reason”.

-A new router technology is still in development and not yet available to developers. In the final product Nintendo hopes to be able to make every Wii a sort of “Wi-Fi hotspot” with each user connecting to that user and so on. They also want to be able to allow different users to share things and are thinking about setting up a pseudo-P2P network through Connect24, where users can share content and “other things”. This means that even if you have a dial-up connection or no internet, you can still connect to Wii Connect24.

-The Wii will indeed have a PPU included in final hardware. It will have only 32MB though, which will still take a considerable amount of pressure off of other chips.

-A still-in-development simple dev tool will be made available to users through the Connect24 network. It will allow users to create a simple game in 2D or simple 3D and share it with the world. This will hopefully be available on the network by launch.

-The last big secret is the “graphics solution”. It revolves around a whole lot of non-volatile RAM (opting out of HDD support, RAM is much faster than a HDD). And a development interface that centers on a AI-controlled command-line interface. This additional tech only included in final dev kits, while most developers donʼt have access to final dev kits.

EGM Wii Rumors

The latest issue of EGM contains a couple very juicy rumors in their rumor section. Take these with a smaller grain of salt then usual…EGM does have an ear very close to the ground.

The biggest rumor from EGMʼs rumor section is that many third party developers are ditching their PS3 projects in favor of the Wii. This change can most likely be attributed to a combination of a strong Wii showing at E3, and the high pricepoint of the PS3.

LucasArts is hearing the cries of Wii fans everywhere. A rumored Star Wars game is coming to the Wii (exclusive), and lightsaber battles will be the main focus of the title.

Once again, these are just rumors for now…

Nintendo's Wii Controller: How does it work?

dot_clear.gif

Dean Takahashi of Mercurynews poses the all important question of how does the Wii controller work ? He pieces together all that is known so far about the Wii controller such as it has a MEMS device and tries to break it down into managable chunks, for example he draws metaphorical reference to tiny little machines like gears with regards to the MEMS chip. We think his article is supposed to be easy to understand, but it turns out to be some quite heavy reading!

wii_mote_4f_small.jpg

quote:

The controller senses motion. It's got a MEMS device. That's short for micro electro-mechanical system. This is a little silicon chip built with semiconductor manufacturing technology. But in contrast to chips, MEMS devices are like tiny little machines, like gears. In this case, the chip suppliers Analog Devices and ST Microelectronics have built MEMS accelerometers. These are the same devices that they use in laptop hard disk drives. If they start falling, the accelerometer senses the motion and the drive will immediately lock down its head so that it doesnʼt damage the disk upon impact. The accelerometers are also used to detect impacts that trigger air bag deployments.

The chip senses direction and acceleration by measuring changes in the electrons within it. The electrons move around depending upon the position and motion of the controller.

Broadcom makes the wireless Bluetooth radio chip that transmits the positional data to the console in real time. All of the components are inexpensive and they are a lot faster than they used to be. Thatʼs how a big backhand stroke by the player gets translated into a virtual stroke in a tennis game. But if all that is in there, what do they need the optical sensor for. Can't they just calculate where the controller is pointing based on the XYZ data and motion data alone?

E3 Scores

Nintendo - A-

MS - A

Sony - C+

Wii no price at E3 because the vertical sensor isnt finished on the controller. Company doesnt have known price for system until this is known. Also some peripheral for racing game that would make them easier to handle being considered.
