Iwata has remarked to the Japanese publication Nikkei that the Wii is not a next-gen console. Next-gen would imply that the console is an extension of a previous incarntion' date=' which is it not.

Wii gets Bleach

SEGA of Japan hints at more Wii support.

Despite already showing both Sonic WildFire and Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz at E3 2006, as well as the inclusion of Genesis games on the Virtual Console, SEGA is showing its love for the Wii console yet again. SEGA of Japan recently added a teaser image onto its official site, showing off what can only be a hint towards a Wii version of the popular fighting franchise Bleach.

Based on a Japanese anime of the same name, the Bleach franchise has already graced the Nintendo DS in Japan, developed by the legendary designers over at Treasure. Bleach DS has already received an astonishing amount of support from importers worldwide, and if the Bleach series manages to hit US shores on the Wii it is sure to be a cult classic as well. SEGA of Japan provided no additional info on the game, but isn't hiding the fact that Bleach Wii is apparently on the way.

The official teaser image can be found here.

Little Losses for the Wii

Iwata predicts minimal financial losses on Wii hardware.

A typical notion for the videogame industry is that of fairly substantial financial losses during the introductory phase of a new console with the expectation that costs will decline as component prices drop and production efficiency increases. However, in a press conference in Tokyo yesterday, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata stated that the Wii would buck this trend and have fairly minimal losses.

Iwata called the notion that the introduction of a new gaming console necessarily leading to significant losses in its initial stages "strange." Iwata went on to state that Nintendo "can't promise we [the company] won't even have a one yen loss, but we are not expecting an enormous loss."

By way of comparison, Sony told investors and analysts to expect that the introduction of the PlayStation 3 would lead to an estimated $884 million loss for the games division in the upcoming fiscal year while Microsoft has admitted that the amount spent on the Xbox 360 was higher than anticipated.

With the Wii's North American launch price to be less than $250, the company expects consoles sales of around 6 million units and software sales of about 17 million units by March 2007.

Wii Price and Release Date Coming

Both will be announced by September, according to Nintendo's president.

During a Japanese marketing event held on Wednesday, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said that Wii's price and release date would be revealed by September.

Nintendo has previously stated that Wii would "not exceed $250" and would be released in the "fourth quarter" of this year.

More information as it becomes available.

Virtual Console Prices Revealed

Newly developed arcade-style games to be cheaper than you think.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata outlined a price range for some games on Wii's Virtual Console download service during a marketing conference held in Japan on Wednesday. The company leader said that some Virtual Console games would cost between ¥500 and ¥1,000 yen, or $4.50 and $8.99 USD.

"We'd like people to play new, low-scale games for ¥500 yen or ¥1000 yen," Iwata stated.

These prices apparently encapsulate only titles newly created for the Virtual Console. It is not yet clear if classic NES, S-NES and N64 games will fall under the same price range umbrella.

"We'd like to put an end to turning games into big titles -- like taking simple game concepts, just adding modes and selling for 5800 yen," Iwata said.

By comparison, Microsoft charges between 400 and 1,200 points ($5 to $12.50 USD) for Xbox Live Arcade games and lacks Nintendo's acclaimed and robust library of classics.

Iwata also stated that load times for these Virtual Console games would be short and sweet. "It probably won't be that this is the case for every game, but we're bugging the development staff to make startup take three seconds," the Nintendo president said.

Nintendo has not yet revealed which games will be available on the Virtual Console, but such classics as Super Mario Bros., Super Mario 64 and Sonic the Hedgehog were demoed at E3 2006.

New Pokemon Announced

Japan will see Pokemon for Wii in 2006 along with the DS titles. First Wii video included.

In a press conference in Japan this morning, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata spoke about the two Pokemon entries. For the Wii, very little was said, but everything that was said was big.

Announced was Pokemon Battle Revolution, a game looking very much like an update of the Pokemon Stadium series (complete with a gorgeous next-gen makeover.) Battles shown were two-on-two fights.

Nintendo was unfortunately very coy about whether Wi-Fi Connection-enabled online play is planned for Pokemon Battle Revolution, instead stating only that fans can expect interesting developmental uses of the Wii's Wi-Fi features. Downloadable Pokemons? Online battles and trades? We shall see.

The game is scheduled for release in Japan this winter, which could make it a launch title.

On DS, we have the new Pokemon Diamond and Pokemon Pearl, brand new entries in the franchise custom-made for the DS. The games are confirmed for use over a DS Wi-Fi connection online, and new to this DS game, voice chat is being used for Friends Listed players to communicate while battling. The two DS entries are due out in Japan this Fall. Wirelessly, you can connect your DS to your Wii, bringing your born little 2D creatures to life in glorious 3D on the Wii screen.

Connectivity Returns

Nintendo has big plans for hooking up the DS and Wii.

Connectivity was the name given to Nintendo's failed experiment at connecting GameCube and Game Boy Advance. The idea resulted in a few enjoyable games, but the overall feeling was that all the required wiring and adapters got in the way of the fun.

With Wii and DS, Nintendo is making another try with the Connectivity idea, and this time no wires are involved. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata revealed today some of the ways in which the two platforms will connect:

# The DS can be used as a touch screen controller for the Wii

# DS software can be expanded using the Wii (this seems to include bonus elements like playing DS software through the television -- see below for an example)

# The DS can access DS Station services via the Wii (DS Station is a retail download terminal which allows for DS downloads).

Iwata gave one clear example for the second area of the service, announcing Pokemon Battle Revolution for the Wii in the process. This title will link up with Pokemon Diamond and Pearl. You start off by inserting the Pearl or Diamond cartridge into your DS and Pokemon Battle Revolution into your Wii. The DS then acts as a controller as your Diamond and Pearl Pokemon battle it out on the screen in 3D. You will have a full set of battle options when fighting this way, including player versus player, player versus CPU and Wi-Fi!

Pokemon Battle Revolution is being developed as the first Connectivity title between the DS and Wii. It will be released to Japan after Diamond and Pearl, but before the end of 2006. Diamond and Pearl are set for Japanese release this Fall.

Πολύ μεγάλη υπόθεση αυτό, να έχεις το DS για touch screen controller για το Wii. Και τα 2D παιχνίδια του DS να μετατρέπονται σε full 3D στην TV σου!

Wii Matches PS3 in Shipments

Four million systems planned for this year.

Nintendo went on record in the weeks following E3 with a promise of six million Wii systems worldwide by the end of fiscal 2006 -- that is, by the end of March, 2007. Today, company president Satoru Iwata got a bit more specific, revealing that Nintendo will ship four million of those units worldwide by the end of the calendar year. That's four million systems in circulation by New Year's Day.

This figure puts the Wii at the same level of shipments as the PS3. Sony has also announced plans to ship six million units of its next generation hardware by the end of the fiscal year, with four million hitting before the close of the calendar year.

Now the big question is, how will those units be distributed. Like the PS3, the Wii is scheduled to launch throughout the world later this year. Nintendo will reveal further launch specifics, including pricing information, by September.

Nintendo File Patent For Instant Messaging Like Service

dot_clear.gif

Nintendo have successfully filed a patent which leans towards an instant messsaging service for Wii owners. The patent suggests that Wii owners will be able to create their own profiles with picures and details on favourite and most played games. It is expected that you will be able to talk through an on screen keyboard or a microphone with all the features of a messenger you'd expect such as the ability to block, change status and set-up buddy lists.
