Wii Gains Momentum

A powerful E3 presentation may be just what Nintendo needed.

We're now in the middle ground between E3 2006 and the Wii launch day. With the combination of the already dominant Nintendo DS handheld and newcomer Wii console, the Japanese hardware manufacturer and gaming enterprise has made one of the biggest splashes in company history this year, and it's beginning to show.

Across the Net and in stores nationwide, the Nintendo Wii is beginning to receive recognition. Market analysts are beginning to count Nintendo as a worthy contender once again, rather than the all-too-familiar ugly duckling treatment fans are used to. In fact, the recent buzz has managed to kick-start retailer interest, as select areas are now allowing for pre-release tracking of Wii hardware and software. IGN has spotted more than 45 titles listed in major gaming retailers, as well as a few interesting additions to the list.

Since we just recently got wind of many of the titles for Wii, there's a bit of confusion as to certain games and franchises, as well as grouping issues which can account for the amazingly high number of listed titles. Some retailers, for instance, are listing Super Mario Galaxy alongside Mario Wii, or Wii Sports: Airplane next to Pilotwings. There is some obvious confusion still happening as media outlets are still receiving mixed messages as to marketing plans, specifically for the Wii Sports franchise and many of the playable demos at E3, but the huge list of soon-to-be-available titles is still staggering.

In addition, we've noticed a few interesting listings for games we've yet to confirm as announced. Again, this may simply be a listing error due to post-E3 confusion, or they could in fact be the beginnings of even more franchises on the way to Wii in the coming months. Games such as Duck Hunt, and Medal of Honor Airborne are now being spotted on release lists, along with EA's newest addition to underground racing Need for Speed: Carbon.

As an interesting side-note, we've seen price listings as low as $49.99, and as high as $59.99. In addition, release dates for software can be found as early as October of 2006, or as late as June of 2007. While it is still unconfirmed by Nintendo, the majority of games featured on our launch list fall between late October and early to mid-November of this year, which may hint at a target launch date for the Wii hardware.

Pre-Orders Start At Gamestop!

The company will start taking pre-orders on Wii software soon.

AMN has learned from Gamestop today that the company will begin taking pre-orders on Nintendo Wii launch and after-launch software very soon.

Below we've compiled a list of some of the Wii games Gamestop will be taking pre-orders on.

* Red Steel

* Madden Wii

* Rayman: Raving Rabbids

* Need For Speed: Carbon

* Medal of Honor

More interesting here, perhaps, is the revelation that Need For Speed: Carbon is coming to Wii. The game was quietly announced at Sony's press conference during the week of E3.

Most these games feature a $50 price point, according to Gamestop.

Nintendo Wii is scheduled to release sometime this fall, as are these titles.

Το The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess θα κυκλοφορησει τελικα σε δυο εκδοσεις, μια για το Gamecube και μια για το Wii.

Edit:

Με διαφορά ενός ολόκληρου λεπτού, ο Kostacurtas είναι ο νικητής!

No Dolby Digital for Wii

Official Wii developer documentation backs up what Wii games at E3 suggested.

Official Wii documentation supplied to development studios confirms that Nintendo's new console will be physically unable to output audio in Dolby Digital surround sound. This omission has nothing to do with Wii's horsepower and everything to do with the machine's lack of an optical output.

"Optical digital output is not supported," reads official Wii documentation supplied to studios creating games for Nintendo's new consoles.

There is a single proprietary audio/video jack on Wii and users have the option to plug in different cables depending on their preference. According to developer documentation, Wii owners will be able to insert a composite, S-video or component audio/video cable into the jack, but all three come standard with stereo left and right channel audio cables.

This latest news coincides with showings of Wii software at the Electronics Entertainment Expo 2006. All demoed Wii games were running in Dolby Pro Logic II, the same audio standard employed by GameCube. Dolby Pro Logic II uses a matrix to simulate 5.1 surround sound and many studios have used the alternative to true aural separation for some impressive listening results.

It's important to note that the Wii hardware is not final and therefore a Dolby Digital solution could still surface in the months to come, but that being true, it's not encouraging that official documentation seems to dismiss the option.

More as it develops.

Wii Hardware Changed

Nintendo adds another port specifically for the sensor bar. Pics inside.

Last March at the Game Developers Conference 2006, Nintendo of America featured an on-hand display of its Wii console. The hardware encased inside a sheet of glass, but onlookers could view it from all angles. It was during this time that we snapped a series of photos detailing the ports on the back of the unit.

At E3 2006, the Wii hardware showed up again, this time with a slight change in the form of an additional port. Nintendo appears to have added a dedicated input for the Wii's sensor bar, the device that's placed near or on top of televisions to radiate an IR field that interacts with the Wii controller.

We've included pics that spotlight the change below.

Above, you can see the Wii hardware as it was at March's Game Developers Conference 2006. Notice a proprietary audio/video output and, of course, the power plug.

In the pic above, you can see the Wii hardware as it was at E3 2006. Notice a new port specifically designed to handle the sensor bar's plug. The port actually reads "sensor bar" for people who readers who cannot quite make out the wording.

wii-hardware-changed-20060523050816200.jpg

The input for the sensor bar is entirely separate from the two USB 2.0 ports located at the top of the unit. There may have been a time when Nintendo considered plugging the sensor bar into one of the Wii system's USB 2.0 ports and then reconsidered. In the image to the right, you can see the Wii at E3 2006. Notice that the plug for the sensor bar does not appear to be of typical USB design. It's much smaller, for starters. The nifty orange color makes us happy for reasons unknown.

D2 Creator Turns to Wii

Famed designer Kenji Eno all but confirms that his new company is making a game for Nintendo's new console.

Readers whose videogame-playing years stretch back to 3DO and Dreamcast will almost certainly remember the development studio Warp and its charismatic leader Kenji Eno. The company created some truly pioneering software, including such titles as Enemy Zero, D and D2, the latter of which launched with SEGA's ill-fated platform.

Several years back, Eno disbanded Warp and started a new studio focused on the development of entertainment products outside of videogames. However, according to a report by Gamasutra, he's back with an all-new studio, From Yellow to Orange, and is once again focused on developing videogames.

Gamasutra met briefly with Eno at the Electronics Entertainment Expo 2006, where he confessed that he was working on a "brand new game." Quizzed on the subject, Eno would only say that the title was being created "for a console with a new control device," but then reportedly waved his hands around as though using Nintendo's innovative new pointer.

At Warp, Eno's games were primarily known for daring to be different. The 3DO D utilized CG-animated cut-scenes to tell a story uncommonly deep and atmospheric for the time. The Saturn-based Enemy Zero forced players to use audio cues to identify an otherwise invisible monster in a futuristic storyline. Meanwhile, although Warp itself employed a staff of only five, one of its members was Fumito Ueda, who later went on to make Ico on PlayStation 2.

An official site for From Yellow to Orange is now open and teases that the developer, "... will be on your side." Readers can check it out by clicking right here.

Peter Moore on buying a Wii - “Iʼm sure Iʼll get one”

Well I hope my friend Reggie [Fils-Aime] sends me one, I donʼt know. [laughs] Look I was there when Iwata-san pulled out that thing. I was there in the front row in Tokyo… and I said [to myself] “Youʼve got to give ʽem kudos for trying.” And Iʼm literally going to go over there tomorrow and try to find Reggie or find Perrin [Kaplan] and I think Marioʼs the game… if youʼve got to play one game itʼs Mario. Iʼm sure Iʼll get one. Right now Iʼm trying to get my Brain Age down [laughs]. Look, itʼs not partisan; I love what Nintendo is doing. Theyʼre in a different space… and thereʼs this view now that you buy a 360 for Halo, Grand Theft Auto, Gears of War, all the other stuff we got going, and if you want Metroid, you want Zelda, you want Mario, you go get a Wii. And you put the two together and itʼs probably the same price as the PS3.”
