New Tools For Wii

CRI delivers video and audio tools for Nintendo's new system.

One of Japan's most well-known development tool providers is on board with Wii. CIR Middleware, maker of the popular ADX and Sofdec sound and video libraries, has started official support for Nintendo's "new generation" console via four libraries: CRI ADX, CRI Sofdec, CRI Sound Factory and CRI ROFS.

Of these, ADX and Sofdec should be most recognizable to gamers, as logos for both have been appearing at the startup of games as far back as the Sega Saturn. ADX allows for at most 16 simultaneous audio streams, as well as support for the playback of streams from multiple audio files. Sofdec allows for multiple movies to be displayed simultaneously, with video streams even used for textures.

On Wii, Sofdec will compress a 10 minute, 6Mbps (megabit per second) bit rate movie to 450MB. The Wii implementation will support 60 frames-per-second progressive movie playback.

The other two libraries aren't as well known. CRI Sound Factory is a sound authoring system. CRI ROFS is provides a virtual file system to developers.

All four development libraries are currently available for other game systems.

:mrgreen

Wii Gets A Piece

One Piece joins Dragon Ball on Nintendo's new console.

The latest issue of Japan's weekly Shonen Jump comic magazine is home to first screens and details for Bandai Namco Games' second anime-based Wii title. The company is hard at work on One Piece Unlimited Adventure for the system, based off the popular One Piece anime.

Details are scarce on this action-adventure title. The game is said to have a tremendous sense of scale; in fact, the feeling of freedom is one of the themes. Original character designs will reportedly make it into the game.

Visually, the game appears to use cell shading. The screenshots shown in the magazine don't look too far off from current generation consoles, but we'll wait to see the game in motion before judging.

Unlike the recently announced Wii version of Dragon Ball Z, One Piece seems to be an exclusive Wii title, as the magazine makes no reference to a PlayStation 2 version.

It's unclear if One Piece Unlimited Adventure will make an appearance at E3, but regardless of that, details should be forthcoming from Japanese sources in the coming weeks. Stay tuned, anime-loving Wii fans!

Pre-E3 2006: Square Enix Backs Wii

The maker of Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest to unveil not one, but two major Wii titles at E3 2006.

If you're both a Nintendo and a Square Enix fan, you might want to have a seat. Sources close to Nintendo tell IGN that the publisher of the acclaimed Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest franchises is in development with not one, but two titles for the Big N's new generation Wii console. The games will allegedly be unveiled to the world prior to the Electronics Entertainment Expo 2006 at today's Square Enix pre-event media conference, which begins shortly.

Square Enix officially announced at last year's E3 that it was underway with a Wii sequel to the Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles series, which originated on GameCube as a multiplayer-centric RPG with real-time battle mechanics. Crystal Chronicles was developed by Q-Fund-backed Game Designer's Studio and Square Enix, and published by Nintendo. The title received a solid 7.6 rating from IGN for its lush visuals and intriguing storyline, but the game's reliance on Game Boy Advance controller functionality and link cables at times made its touted multiplayer mode a chore.

Square Enix has not released any new information about the Wii sequel to Crystal Chronicles, but Nintendo fans can undoubtedly look forward to a title that continues the basics of the first game while adding free-hand style controller compatibility and, quite possibly, an online multiplayer cooperative mode.

As for the second Square Enix Wii title, sources stop just shy of slipping us the name, but one insider we chatted with did allege that it's a game which will "make Japanese RPG fans very, very happy." Uh, with Final Fantasy already announced, only one other Square Enix series comes to our mind: Dragon Quest.

Square Enix's DQ titles have remained throughout the years the perfect alternative and, more recently, complement to its Final Fantasy projects, offering up epic storylines and robust fighting systems. Like Final Fantasy, the Dragon Quest games are some of the best-sellers in Japan on a regular basis. Unlike Final Fantasy, which graced GameCube in 2004, Dragon Quest has not seen a Nintendo console since the days of the Super NES.

XAXAXAXAXA!!!!!!
