Metroid Prime 3 Discussion!

Jeux-France has an interview with Richard Vorodi (Game Designer at Nintendo Software Technology) and Kensuke Tanabe (Series Producer) concerning Metroid Prime Hunters, and Metroid Prime 3:

JF: Many players would love to see the franchise evolve in some kind of MMOFPS. Is this possible ? How would you like to see the franchise evolve ?

Richard Vorodi : Thatʼs a really interesting point. I didnʼt know that many players wanted to see a Metroid MMOFPS. I would imagine that anything is possible if thereʼs a solid gameplay idea there. We can expect the series controls to evolve even more on the new Nintendo Wii.

JF: Can we expect a scenaristic link between Metroid Prime Hunters and Metroid Prime 3 ?

Kensuke Tanabe : I think Metroid Prime series is one means to expand Metroid franchise. In that sense, it should be ideal if each title has some kind of connections each other.

JF: What do you think about Nintendo Wii ? Did you try the new controller ? Do you think that a Metroid Prime game could work with the Nintendo Wii concept ?

Richard Vorodi : I canʼt wait to finally own a Nintendo Wii ! Iʼm excited about everything about it from the new controller to the virtual console. This thing is really going to change the way people play games in the future, including Metroid.

JF: Will Metroid Prime 3 be presented at E3 2006 ?

Kensuke Tanabe : It is hard to answer this question until our official announcement is made. At this point in time, what I can affirm is only the fact that it is under development.

Industry Analysts See Good Times Ahead For Wii

A recent GameSpot article in which Michael Wallace and Stephen Tam of UBS Securities discuss how Nintendo could come out the winner of the next-gen console war with Wii:

--Turning to Nintendo, the companyʼs redubbing of the Revolution as the "Wii" hasnʼt gone over too well with Wallace and Tam, though, ultimately, they donʼt believe it matters. "Seems like a kiddie name to us, but if people like the games, who cares what it is called," they remark.

They project a fall release at a $199 price point for the Wii, with Nintendoʼs other existing hardware making some news as well. Wallace and Tam peg June as a possible release date for the Nintendo DS Lite, and they expect a GameCube price cut to $79, possibly to take effect during the show itself.

While they donʼt venture a guess as to the ultimate winners and losers in this round of console wars, Wallace and Tam are positive on the Wii and favor it to gain some market share for Nintendo this time around.

"All the signs are pointing to a Nintendo revival with what they are doing in the console market," they suggest. "The company has a great chance to expand out of its kids-only market and gain a bigger piece of the cross-ownership pie among platforms."

As for specific reasons why, they expect much better third-party support than the GameCube received because of cheaper, simpler development compared to the Xbox 360 and PS3. And given the Wiiʼs unique controller, they expect more Wii-exclusive titles from the third parties. However, they insist Nintendo needs to do a better job supporting the console with its own games than it did for the GameCube launch.

"In order to succeed, we need to see real first-party support early in the system launch window. This means that we need more games like the groundbreaking Mario 64 for the N64. At the show, we will be looking for Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Donkey Kong, and other staples of the Nintendo lineup."--

Midway Announces Three Games for Wii

In a recent press release, game publisher Midway revealed it has three titles - Blitz: The League, Happy Feet and The Ant Bully - currently slated for Nintendo's next-generation console.

From the press release:

Blitz®: The League™ (Xbox 360™, Nintendo Wii™, PSP™

(PlayStation®Portable) system; October 2006) -- The celebrated

arcade-style football franchise is back and better than ever with

a new treatment of America's most popular sport. Blitz: The League

exposes the harsh and troubling, behind-the-scenes stories of a

fictional professional football league.

Happy Feet™ (PlayStation 2, Nintendo GameCube™, Nintendo

Wii, Game Boy® Advance, Nintendo DS™, PC; November 2006) --

Based on Warner Bros. Pictures' upcoming comedy adventure Happy

Feet™, Midway's immersive video game puts the player in the

"tap shoes" of Mumble, a young penguin born into a nation of

singing Emperor Penguins where each needs a Heartsong to attract a

soul mate. Unfortunately, Mumble is the worst singer in the

world...however, as it happens, he is a brilliant tap dancer!

Based on the general storyline of the film, the player will be

able to experience life from the point of view of Mumble in music,

dance and interaction with the friends and enemies of the

penguin's world.

The Ant Bully (PlayStation 2, Nintendo GameCube, Game Boy Advance,

PC; July 2006 - Nintendo Wii; November 2006) -- Go pick on someone

your own size! After bullying an innocent ant colony, a young boy

named Lucas is magically shrunk down to ant size and embarks on a

remarkable adventure. Play as Lucas, experiencing the dangerous

and thrilling life of an ant as you battle, explore and forge new

friendships with natives and other species in his new ant world.

Based on exciting moments from Warner Bros. Pictures upcoming

digitally animated family adventure The Ant Bully, and featuring

all-new challenges created especially for the game, help Lucas

evolve from recluse to hero in his quest to save the colony from

extermination

The aforementioned titles are expected to be playable at this year's E3, held in Los Angeles next week.

IGN Interview With Midway

IGN has an interview with Kraig Kujawa of Midway about bringing the Blitz series to the Wii.

IGN: Letʼs get started. First of all, the question on everyoneʼs mind: Is Blitz: The League going to be built from the ground up for Nintendo Wii, or is it adapted from the other versions?

Kujawa: The answer is both. The Nintendo Wii controller challenges us to rethink everything and thatʼs really part of its charm. For awhile, we were miming in front of a TV with Yo-Yos and glo-sticks trying to wrap our brains around the possibilities, but now that we have the controller and the details, Iʼm convinced that we can do some amazingly fun stuff with it. As such, many of the gameplay mechanics will be completely built from scratch. As for the rest of the game, Blitz for Wii (affectionately called Blitz: The Wiigue here at the offices) will essentially be a much improved version of the original Blitz: The League. Weʼre adding some cool new features that didnʼt make it into the last game, and a few special bonuses as well. Weʼre really excited about the possibilities for this product and we think gamers will be equally as happy.

IGN: How far along is Blitz for Wii right now? Will we see it at E3?

Kujawa: Weʼre underway, but you wonʼt see Blitz for Wii playable at E3. But look for the first peek later this Summer...
