Revolution Officially Renamed 'Wii'

 

Nintendo has officially ditched the drab "Revolution" name for its next-gen console, and adopted the more sophisticated "Wii".

 

ImageLess than two weeks before E3, Nintendo has released a statement addressing the change-up, and explained what exactly the name Wii represents:

 

"While the code-name 'Revolution' expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer. Wii will break down that wall that separates video game players from everybody else."

 

"Wii will put people more in touch with their games … and each other. But youʼre probably asking: What does the name mean? Wii sounds like 'we,' which emphasizes this console is for everyone."

 

"Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii. Wii has a distinctive 'ii' spelling that symbolizes both the unique controllers and the image of people gathering to play."

 

"And Wii, as a name and a console, brings something revolutionary to the world of video games that sets it apart from the crowd. So thatʼs Wii. But now Nintendo needs you. Because, itʼs really not about you or me. Itʼs about Wii."

 

In addition, Nintendo hit on a number of Wii-related points. Nintendo stated that "A number of Wi-Fi-enabled launch titles are in development that will employ Nintendo's newly announced wireless gaming service, Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection."

 

Also mentioned was an SD memory card expansion bay that will allow users to complement the 512 megabytes of internal flash memory.

 

Nintendo added that "A variety of prototype colors are being showcased during E3," although it isn't clear what colors will be available at launch. Nintendo reinforced its commitment to bring both smaller profile indie-developed games to the system as well as big-budget "masterpiece" games by implementing "a dynamic development architecture."

A worldwide network of Nintendo players "can gather to compete in a comfortable, inviting environment."

Kaplan said the criticism was not unexpected, given Wii's uniqueness.

 

"I think people have to look back and let it settle in," she said. "I'm sure people felt the same way when Google was named – or the iPod. Napster. Yahoo. There's a whole host of unusual names that have become a part of everyday conversation and I think they're viewed now as unique."

 

The Wii will make its public debut a little less than two weeks from now at E3 (the Electronic Entertainment Expo), the annual trade show of the video game industry. At that same show, Sony (Research) will unveil more details about the PlayStation 3 and Microsoft (Research) will talk about its future plans for the Xbox 360.

 

So why announce the name now and not at the show?

 

By letting the gaming community vent now about the name, they will be less distracted as launch titles for the system are announced and initial reports about what it's like to play the games begin to come in.

 

Also, said Kaplan, "We want people to understand our approach before we get to E3. [Also], it's really noisy at E3 and I don't think we would have had the chance to explain how we came to the name."

Καθώς το κωδικό όνομα “Revolution” εξέφραζε την κατεύθυνση μας το, Wii αντιπροσωπεύει την απάντηση.

Το Wii θα σπάσει τον τοίχο που χωρίζει τους παίκτες Video Games από όλους τους άλλους.

Το Wii θα φέρει τους ανθρώπους σε επαφή με τα παιχνίδια … και τους άλλους ανθρώπους. Αλλά πιθανόν να αναρωτιέστε : Τι ακριβώς σημαίνει το όνομα?

Το Wii προφέρεται σαν “we,” (=εμείς) το οποίο με έμφαση δηλώνει ότι η κονσόλα είναι για όλους!

Το Wii μπορεί εύκολα να απομνημονευτεί από ανθρώπους σε όλο τον κόσμο, ανεξαρτήτως της γλώσσας που μιλούν. Καμία σύγχυση. Απλά Wii.

Το Wii έχει μια χαρακτηριστική γραφή “ii” με δύο i που συμβολίζουν και τα μοναδικά χειριστήρια αλλά και την εικόνα των ανθρώπων που μαζεύονται να παίξουν.

Με την πρώτη ματιά φαίνεται χαζό, (What an Idiotic Idea ) αλλά τουλάχιστον είναι κάτι διαφορετικό και δείχνει ότι τολμάνε ... έβαλαν ένα όνομα που θα παίξει ρόλο στην πορεία της κονσόλας , θετικά ή αρνητικά .
