Crossbeam Studios More Details On Thorn

infaltrationa_01.jpg

"Weʼre really pushing a dual reality into Thorn, thereʼs going to be parts in the game that things just seem to be totally out of your control and players have to really fight their gamer instincts to get through. Weʼve progressed on the design, and hope to include as much of a sci-fi fantasy feel as possible. The first level in the game is what youʼve seen in the artwork of the squad busting through the door guns blazing, the second level is on a space station orbiting Mars. But as you progress onto alien worlds and into alien cultures things start to take a more fantasy feel and becomes more surreal. Still, it is a sci-fi at heart, and that element never goes away, just the fantasy aspect becomes more noticable. Weʼre also exploring the idea of what being human means from a psycological perspective".

The Rise and Fall of Franchises

The success of Guitar Hero and Dance Dance Revolution reinforces one of the principles we have outlined. No matter how complex and visually stunning a 3D game, it still lives on a 2D screen. We look forward to more “3D+1” games. The Nintendo Revolution “wand” is a perfect example of physical realism. There is more realism in pointing a gun at an enemy than depressing a controllerʼs analog stick and clicking the A button. If developers support the wand, Nintendo could recapture significant share. A successful Nintendo Revolution will no doubt hurt traditional franchises leveraging traditional controllers, and could force developers to embrace wand-like controls. This could further demand developers to redesign games, especially first-person shooters.

Rayman Returns

Ubisoft trains the limbless one for current and next-gen consoles.

For many of us, Rayman 2 was one of the last truly great platformers. Certainly it was one of the best in recent memory, tackling the genre's leap into three dimensions almost as ably as Mario 64 and rendering Rayman a real gaming icon.

The series dropped in to visit with 2003's Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc, but franchise papa Michel Ancel (the auteur célèbre of Beyond Good & Evil) wasn't as directly involved with the title. Fans were left to hope Ancel would hop with the limbless hero again.

Today, Ubisoft announced that a new Rayman title is indeed in development at Ubisoft's Montpellier studio, lead by Ancel. Though the company is holding back on details, it did confirm that the new game will arrive for both current- and next-generation systems.

"Rayman is one of the brands that encapsulate Ubisoft's ability to create characters and universes that appeal to all kinds of players," said Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot. "We are expecting this new Rayman video game to sweep players off their feet."

Ubisoft plans to release the new Rayman in the coming holiday season. We'll soon be back with more.

Pilotwings sequel in the works?

egm2qv.th.jpg EGM magazine scan npw_3.jpg N64: Pilotwings

The latest issue of EGM has discussed that Nintendo may indeed be working on a sequel to Pilotwings in their rumors section, which last graced the N64. A lot of us were holding out for a Cube version of Pilotwings, but we now know that the chance for that has come and gone.

Brother In Arms 3 Is Headed To The Revolution?

15317_bia3_4.jpg15317_bia3_5.jpg XBOX360 version

PC Powerplay featured an article on Brothers in Arms 3, headed for the Revolution, Xbox 360, PS3, and the PC around February 2007 (to the best of our knowledge, at least), these screens truly show off the beauty that the Unreal Engine 3.0 has to offer. New features include being able to control multiple squads including the fire team, which will carry heavy artillery. They hope to have support for 32 players online while still being able to achieve a near-cinematic visual quality.

Please note that all of those screenshots are from the Xbox 360 version of the game. Though the Revolution version is likely to look a lot scaled down you can expect amazing control mechanics on the Revolution version which should make it much more funner on the Revolution of the game.

Ubisoft's Red Steel Revealed

Revolution-exclusive first-person shooter with big guns and swords? Game Informer Mag has the details.

April 7, 2006 - The latest issue of Game Informer Magazine has a cover story on an ambitious new game developed from the ground up for Nintendo's next generation console, codenamed Revolution. The title, called Red Steel, according to the publication, is a first-person shooter that enables players to take control of a sharp sword in addition to an assortment of guns to fight off enemies. The mag published first screens of the title in motion, which appear to be in 16x9 widescreen, and they look pretty good to us. We encourage readers to pick up the latest issue to see the images for themselves.

The title utilizes the Revolution's free-hand style pointer for some innovative control mechanics, Game Informer reports. For instance, players are able to hold swords or guns normally or side-armed depending upon how they hold the controller. Meanwhile, it's possible to block incoming attacks using the sword, too. The publication also states that gamers will be able to jump over and take cover behind objects with the flick of the Revolution controller. On top of everything else, the mag promises that Red Steel will not only support an online multiplayer mode, but arrive as a launch title later this year.

The new issue of Game Informer Magazine is already hitting the homes of subscribers, as evidenced by the numerous scans that have flooded the Web. But it doesn't pay to steal. Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy. The screens alone are worth the price of admission.
