Old Nintendo games will NOT be free on the Revolution

http://www.gamespot.com/news/2005/06/07/news_6127066.html

Iwata also talked a bit more about the Revolution's capability to download and play games from Nintendo's previous consoles, called the Virtual Console system. First off, he shot down speculation that all first-party Nintendo games will be downloadable for free. "There's rumors floating on the Internet that the Virtual Console will be available for play for free, but we have no plans to distribute [the games] without charge."

Iwata's comments contradict recent statements by Nintendo Vice President George Harrison, who implied in a recent GameSpot interview that first-party Nintendo titles could be "downloadable for free."

Revolution will not support HD

http://cube.ign.com/articles/624/624200p1.html

"It is accurate that at this time we will not support high-definition [on Revolution]," confirms Nintendo of America's vice president of corporate affairs, Perrin Kaplan.

"Nintendo's Revolution is being built with a variety of gamers' needs in mind, such as quick start-up time, high power, and ease of use for development and play. It's also compact and sleek, and has beautiful graphics in which to enjoy innovative games," Kaplan says. "Nintendo doesn't plan for the system to be HD compatible as with that comes a higher price for both the consumer and also the developer creating the game. Will it make the game better to play? With the technology being built into the Revolution, we believe the games will look brilliant and play brilliantly. This can all be done without HD."

A set of specifications purporting to be for Nintendo's Revolution console have appeared on the Internet, outlining a system with impressive graphics capabilities - but the company has confirmed that high-definition outputs won't be supported.

The specifications, which appeared on blog site Nintendo Centrium, suggest that the system will be powered by two 1.8Ghz IBM PowerPC G5 processors, a 600Mhz graphics chip from ATI and a 7.1 Digital Sound chipset.

The console will apparently sport 128MB of high speed 1T SRAM as main memory, along with 256MB of slower DRAM, while the graphics chip has 12MB of on-board high speed RAM. 6GB proprietary DVD-size discs, designed by Panasonic, would be used for Revolution's games.

Revolution Date and Price?

I know, I know, Amazon isnʼt exactly a bastion of reliable information when it comes to pre-order sales. Keeping that in mind, Amazon France has started taking pre-orders for the Nintendo Revolution for 299.99 Euros with a June 15, 2006 release date. I feel confident this isnʼt dead on, but I canʼt imagine they just through a dart at the board to get the price and date. Call it an educated guess, but the information has to be coming from somewhere.

Nintendo Revolution Controller Announcement Dated at Last! Mario and more…

SPOnG can finally confirm the date by which the world will be relieved of the constant burden of wondering about what Nintendoʼs Revolution controller actually is.

Youʼll be pleased to know that a full explanation of Revolution will be made by Nintendo president Satoru Iwata during his Tokyo Game Show keynote address. This news represents completely finalised Nintendo plans – Iwata will fully outline The Secret on 16th September 2005.

Nintendo is assembling key media to attend this yearʼs show, due to take place between 16th – 18th September 2005. Iwata will make his presentation of current activities at Nintendo. He will outline current projects and will then - unveil the Revolution in all its glory.

The Revolution presentation will include an explicit outline of the hardware and its controller and input mechanic, as well as illustrate exactly how it will work. It will go on to show games running on the system and how they make use of the technology.

Mario 128, or ʽNew Marioʼ as it is dubbed internally at Nintendo, is expected to be the star of the show.

SPOnG has a record of perfectly outlining what Iwataʼs keynote addresses will entail. And we can tell you with 100% certainty that in the next three and a bit weeks, weʼll all be looking at Nintendo Revolution controller hardware and accompanying games. Exciting times indeed.

Weʼll bring you updates as they break, as well as Tokyo Game Show coverage direct from the show floor. Let us know what you think, and drop any questions for SPOnGʼs editorial staff in the forum below.

Nintendo Patents Sanity for Games

Earlier this week, Nintendo was granted a patent for a sanity system for video games by the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

A description for the patent states that Nintendo has registered a game system incorporating a game character's sanity level that is affected by occurrences in the game such as encountering a game creature or gruesome situation. A character's sanity level is modified by an amount determined based on a character reaction to the occurrence such as taking a rest or slowing game progress and/or an amount of character preparation. That is, if a character is prepared for the particular occurrence, the occurrence may have little or no affect on the character's sanity level. As the character's sanity level decreases, game play is effected such as by controlling game effects, audio effects, creating hallucinations and the like. In this context the same game can be played differently each time it is played.

If implemented in the right way, this new gameplay mechanic could definitely take games’ replayability to a whole new level. But the question is, what game is Nintendo applying this new invention to? Nintendo explains in its patent application that the invention is particularly suited for implementation in action, adventure and RPG games, but that it may be used in any suitable videogame.

We saw some form of hallucinations in Super Mario 64 so this new sanity system could be making its way into the next-generation Super Mario game, rumored to be unveiled at this month’s Tokyo Game Show.

Some of the examples Nintendo gives in its patents (which was first filled in December, 2002) for hallucinations are:

* Wall carvings coming to life and reaching out for the character

* Something in wall or under floor moving by the character (Frighteners type of thing)

* Statue watching the character (Head tracking)

* Suit of armor moving (Relaxed to on guard stance)

* Static statue or object that appears to follow the character when they're not looking

* False doors that appear and disappear when the attempt to open is made

* Glowing eyes blinking in the darkness, yet when the area is illuminated they disappear

* Painting that shifts and changes along with its meaning

* Points of interest markers that the character's head will watch

In addition to visual effects, Nintendo also mentions audio effects, some of them similar to those heard in Luigi’s Mansion:

* Ambient environmental sounds that get amplified or distorted

* Heartbeat of character increases (May also be synchronized with Rumble Pak)

* Wind

* Lightening

* Cavern/damp-dripping sewer sound

* Creatures sounds

* Footsteps

* Earth rumbles (e.g. great beast foot steps, may also be synchronized with Rumble Pak and camera shake)

* Loud noises coming from beyond a doorway, but when opened there is only silence

* Whispering sounds coming from random locations that fade in and out

Is Nintendo REVOLUTIONizing gaming yet again?

Developers may have seen Revolution controller

The secrecy-shrouded controller for the Nintendo Revolution console has been seen by a number of developers already, according to comments made byNintendo of America VP of sales and marketing Reggie Fils-Aime.

Speaking with US magazine EGM, the bombastic Fils-Aime revealed a little additional information about the console and its much talked about joypad - including the fact that just because "you and your fans haven't seen the controller doesn't mean that no one else has."

"The thing that I always find surprising, and certainly in the last year I've had wonderful opportunities to spend quality time with a number of our key third-party publishers, is when you sit down and share the innovation with them, just how excited they get," he said.

EA set to sideline Revolution

In an interview with a Japanese gaming magazine, EA Vice President David Gardner has suggested that the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 will be attracting the bulk of EA's attention out of the three next gen consoles. This could mean that EA will be sidelining the Nintendo Revolution in favor of the Sony and Microsoft systems. Since no specifics have been announced it's possible that EA could continue the trend of porting popular games to the Revolution, as it's been doing with the Gamecube. Without more information and the actual quote there's little point in jumping to any conclusions about EA's plans. We'll keep you updated on any developments.
