DIEC: Revolution Controller Holds New Secret

Miyamoto’s at it again. We’ve just seen the Revolution controller propaganda that Iwata-san screened at this year’s TGS. And now, here’s Shiggy at the podium, wrapping up his presentation and talking about all the possibilities the remote control offers.

“…you could use that extra peripheral with the controller for numchukus,” he says, gesturing. I feel like I’ve heard this sale a million times now. Yes, numchukus, cool for FPS, cooking games, I got it.

“There’s another secret,” he says. I perk up. “But I’m not going to go into that here. That’ll be for a later date.”

He sweeps into an abrupt closing and before I know it the gaming legend is off the stage. A picture of Mario flashes on the screen. A polite “arigatou gozaimashita” is written below.

No Shiggy, thank you.

Lete na exei sxesi me to holographic revolution pou legane oi fimes? Makari! :P

BIG SECRET YET UNKNOWN ABOUT THE NINTENDO REVOLUTION

Nintendo says there is still A "big" feature still kept under wraps for the Nintendo Revolution

Nintendo executives including Shigeru Miyamoto spoke at the Digital Interactive Entertainment Conference yesterday in Japan.

Miyamoto spoke of a “big” feature on the Revolution that’s still kept a secret. While this comes from various sources, it’s obvious we don’t know everything about Nintendo’s next console or its unique controller.

Just few days ago, Nintendo announced that they will be hold their E3 press conference on may 9th. Perhaps we have to wait until then to find out what the Revolution has in store.

Of course this could very well be the standard hype large companies put out, or maybe Nintendo still has a few special surprise in store for the Nintendo Revolution.

'Raid over the River' Proposed for Nintendo Revolution

Upon recent investigation of the CCT Game Calendar 2006, Revolution Report managed to discover that a developer by the name of NIBRIS has a game in development titled Raid over the River, which, according to the calendar, is slated for release on Nintendo's next-generation console, code-named the Nintendo Revolution.

Revolution Report contacted NIBRIS directly for further insight into the matter. According to Piotr Orlowski, the game's project manager, NIBRIS "would like to do this game directly for Revolution and DS," adding further that "only Nintendo platforms [will] get this game." Responding to why Raid over the River would only come to Nintendo's console rather than Xbox 360 or PS3, Orlowski stated, "Nintendo is our life. We have all of the Nintendo consoles; we are fans."

When questioned on whether or not his company had received a Revolution development kit, Orlowski said, "To be honest - we don't have a Revolution development kit yet, so we're doing a version on PC but we have a lot of ideas [of how to] use the Revolution controller." For Orlowski, the "idea of the Revolution pad is almost like a beautiful dream."

Regarding the issue of having a pubisher for NIBRIS' game, Orlowski responded, "We don't have a distributor yet but some of them are speaking with us." Apparently, NIBRIS contacted Nintendo of Europe to discuss publishing Raid over the River, but was told that "the game wasn't in [NOE's] target."

According to the latest issue of Famitsu, Nintendo has opened an office in Tokyo dedicated exclusively to the ongoing development of the Nintendo Revolution eddition in the Super Smash Bros. series. Heading up the new studio is the series' original creator, Masahiro Sakurai.

His return to Nintendo comes after a two year absence.

According to Famitsu, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata convinced Sakurai to return to Nintendo at the E3 held earlier this year.

The Smash Bros team will consist of 50 developers. Given the short timeframe, they will probably need all the people they can get.

Revolution graphics barely better than GameCube’s ????

The January 2006 issue of EGM features some more ammunition in the ongoing console flame war with reports that early Nintendo Revolution graphics are “barely better than those on GameCube.”

From the Rumor Mill [all bolded text is Q’s]: “Visually impaired

The Q hates being the bearer of bad news, but it comes with the territory (at least that’s what the rumormonger handbook says). During a recent powwow with a few well-known gamemakers, some discussed their hands-on time with early Revolution development kits. OK, here it goes: According to those fellas, the graphics that Nintendo’s next-gen system can produce are barely better than those on GameCube. Hey, sounds a lot like Xbox-Xbox 360.”

That last line is a good reminder that we saw similar visual issues with 360 games early in development as well, and quite a few of those titles turned out decently in the end (for launch titles). Of course, if you’re working with graphics hardware only 2-3 times more powerful than the GameCube’s, don’t expect a miracle in the graphics capabilities, especially with alpha or beta SDKs. The Revolution may get hyped to kingdom come, but there’s a reason why screenshots aren’t being released to the public until next year. Temper your launch expectations, and we should all rest a little easier… till E3 rolls around, that is.

Φυσικά μιλάμε για φήμη, αλλά καλό είναι να βλέπουμε και τις αρνητικές εικασίες που κάνουν μερικοί.

Revolution Tech Details Emerge

Devs give us the scoop on performance power and RAM capacity. Exclusive information revealed.

Nintendo has during recent months remained publicly quiet on its next-generation console, codenamed Revolution, but even so the company has taken behind-the-scenes steps to prepare development studios for the platform. We spoke with multiple software houses either creating software for or experimenting with the machine in its still incomplete stage and have been able to compile some new technical details.

Readers are advised to make two notes before continuing with this article. The first is that developers are still working with incomplete Revolution hardware. Most studios are, in fact, developing on "GameCube-based kits," according to major software houses we spoke to, which have asked to remain anonymous. The second is that developers are still without final specifications for Revolution's ATI-developed graphics chip, codenamed Hollywood.

That stated, many third parties have been partially briefed by Nintendo representatives about the Revolution hardware, its overall horsepower, and the Big N's plan for the console. Based on the information studios have relayed to us, Revolution is truly poised to cater to an altogether different game market than either Microsoft or Sony with their Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles respectively. Nintendo's machine will simply not deliver the same graphic horsepower as its competitors. Revolution is all about the controller and what it can do for gameplay experiences.

When Revolution was initially unveiled, a Nintendo executive said it would be "two-to-three times more powerful than GameCube." The company never commented on Revolution's horsepower again and we were later told that the initial statement was incorrect. However, according to development houses, that description accurately sums up Revolution's power.

"To be honest, it's not much more powerful than an Xbox. It's like a souped up Xbox," a major third party source revealed to us. "But it's the controller that makes the difference and the controller is really nice."

Nintendo has said all along that sheer horsepower has not been a priority with Revolution. Rather, the company hopes to make the console small, quiet and affordable. It is very likely for this reason that the Big N chose not to make Revolution compatible with the emerging 720p, 1080i and 1080p high-definition video resolutions, which are focuses for competing consoles.

Gamers holding out for Nintendo to reverse its stance on the HD front may be in for a disappointment. Revolution will not have the RAM capacity to store and display an abundant source of high-definition textures. Third parties have revealed to us that the console will top out with 128MBs of RAM, and possibly even less. One studio would not give us an exact figure, but did say, "The same as GameCube plus an extra 64MB of main RAM." That number is by comparison nearly triple the amount of memory in GameCube. However, it is a far cry from the 512MBs present in Xbox 360.

One studio we spoke to hinted at the possibility of accessing further Revolution RAM, but its comments were cryptic. "There is more RAM that you can use, but Nintendo is using that for general memory, like game saves and all sorts of other things. You could use it, but you can't rely on it." This comment seems to suggest that developers might be able to tap into Revolution's 512MBs of on-board Flash memory, but to our knowledge such a solution would be too slow to utilize in games.

Still, the studios we spoke with are still very intrigued by Revolution and are not ruling out the possibility of additional graphic horsepower. No developer that chatted with us had, or was willing to share, details on the console's GPU, Hollywood. One studio said: "As soon as we find out what it can do then we'll know if Revolution will just be like an Xbox or something a little more."

Asked if it was developing for Revolution, one major third party source said that it was well past the experimental stage and was evaluating what types of games might work on the platform. "We are looking at it quite differently. It's like another current generation platform for us. But it's such a nice controller that it opens up a lot of possibilities. It's very different and it's very precise."

Finally, quizzed about publishers' internal reaction to the device, a source responded: "People are interested, but they're still taking it all in at the moment. I'm sure [Nintendo is] going to get a fair amount of support. Probably a lot of people will initially look at existing franchises and whether or not they can kind of do customized versions for Revolution using most of the assets they've got. But whether they'll say, "Okay, let's do something completely original for it," that's the other question because it could be quite expensive to do that. Not as expensive as doing a PS3 or Xbox 360 game. But if you're a third party and you want to do cross platform, if you're doing a game on 360 you can do it on PS3 or PC using the same assets and that does make it a bit easier."

Nintendo has consistently downplayed the role of horsepower with Revolution, often saying that graphics have reached a "saturation point" in today's games. Nintendo bigwig Shigeru Miyamoto has suggested that players might not be able to tell the difference between the new Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and some high-definition games.

The Big N will reveal much more about Revolution beginning early next year, according to company executives, and will show first games at the Electronics Entertainment Expo 2006 next May in Los Angeles. Stay tuned for more.

Nintendo Revolution may drop Thanksgiving '06

Nintendo may drop the company's next-generation video game console, code-named Revolution, as late as Thanksgiving 2006, according to IGN.

The late 2006 release date would make the Revolution the latest to the next-generation video game wars. Microsoft was first out of the gate with the global launch of the Xbox 360 this holiday season. Rival Sony is scheduled to drop the Playstation 3 in spring 2006.

Previous reports estimated Revolution's release at mid-2006.

Nintendo's GameCube was released over one year after Sony's Playstation 2 console and has seen poor sales against it and Microsoft's Xbox.

Nintendo head Satoru Iwata previously said that Nintendo would not be late to the next console wars, however recent reports say that the video game veteran no longer sees itself as direct competition to Sony or Microsoft's next-generation offerings.

The Revolution may find itself in a niche category due to the console's remote controller that can detect motion and distance from a standard TV screen. The motion sensing device will set up a virtual object in the player's hand to allow for real life movements in baseball, golf, cooking, fishing, or other action-oriented games.

The direct pointer can be tethered to an analog stick in order to act as a viewing and shooting device in first-person shooters.

The Revolution will not include high-definition support and is expected to retail for much lower than competing consoles.

Nintendo will hold a press conference this May at the Electronics Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles, where the company is expected to reveal full details on the console, release date, price, and games.
