NGamer Wii/DS Information!

Story has been confirmed true! DrDark sent me a couple pictures of the information in question, and it turns out the the article indeed states the info below. There is also a tiny blurb about using the Wii to play DS games on your TV.

-Confirmation on Spore: "Release: Spring 2007"

Plus: "EA have confirmed that link-up play with the DS is on the cards, so you can deform your species on the fly."

"Everything you need to know for the impending launch of the mighty Wii".

Under the section on 'DS Connectivity', they say "EAʼs spore is one upcoming title that will allow you to transfer data from little console to big in a flash."

-Sensor bar is "50% smaller", "little bigger than a couple of pencils glued together."

-Wii-moteʼs 6kb of internal memory "personalises your remote - potentially storing things like sensitivity, y-axis settings for FPSs, and even scores and saves."

-Wii-mote runs on two AA batteries, offering around 60 hours of gameplay. That amountʼs reduced to half (around 30 hours) if using the sensor bar though.

-[Talking about SD cards] "these tiny cards can be used to store game saves and virtual console games, but Digital Right Management features mean you canʼt play your games on someone elseʼs Wii."

Spore And Super Paper Mario Coming to Wii

Spore

Do you think there's any chance that Spore will be released for the Wii? Do you think it will be a port, or designed for the Wii? And are you as excited about Spore as I am?

Matt responds: It was officially confirmed for Wii and will make use of Nintendo's unique controller.

Super Paper Mario

Hey Matt. It doesn't seem like Super Paper Mario for the GCN is coming out on October 9th (given that it hasn't been released in Japan yet, and everyone but Nintendo has the game listed as Q4 '06 or Q1 '07). I know you vaguely hinted at games for another console being moved onto Wii instead. So is there any chance Nintendo is going to move Super Paper Mario onto Wii? Or was that just a one-time deal with Zelda?

Matt responds: Hmm. How should I write this? Have to be vague, you know? Let me just say that yes, Paper Mario will be headed to Wii and not GameCube. Now read between the lines, damn you! Wait. That was a terrible hint! All right, that's it for today. Time to beat Bozon.

Nintendo Confirms Wii Shipment Quantities

In the wake of the PlayStation 3 launch shipment slash and European delay, Nintendo has issued a statement to remind the world that its Wii is still on track to ship as planned.

Nintendo of America said in an official statement, "Wii is on track to ship in Q4. Nintendo plans to ship 6 million systems to retailers around the world between its launch in the fourth quarter of 2006 and the end of its fiscal year on March 31, 2007."

The company has reiterated its launch target time and again, but following the nixing of the PS3 worldwide launch, yet another confirmation was timely. Nintendo has yet to announce the exact date of the Wii launch or its pricing, although this may be revealed at upcoming press events taking place next week.

Nintendo is set to take advantage of a low PS3 presence at retailers across the globe, as the possibility exists that many consumers will substitute a Wii purchase in lieu of a PS3. The extent of this substitution is debatable.

Sony still maintains the same fiscal year PS3 shipment goal that it planned prior to this week's announcements. Like Nintendo, it intends on shipping 6 million units of its new hardware by March 31, 2007.

Sony was forced to roll back its launch plans yesterday due to an insufficient supply of blue laser diodes.

Shipment of Broadway for Wii has been well underway; hint of power revealed

Posted Sep 8th 2006 12:01AM by Robert Summa

Filed under: Nintendo Wii, Strategy, Competitive Gaming, Business

IBM has announced that their Broadway chip custom-designed for Nintendo's Wii console is not only already in Nintendo's hands but has been since July. "We have been shipping well within this quarter (July)," said Ron Martino, director of IBM Technology Collaboration Solutions. "In fact, we have shipped a significant volume in this quarter."

So what does this news mean to gamers who have been waiting patiently for a release date from Nintendo? Well, considering that Nintendo has had their hands on a large amount of the final Broadway chips since July, we can easily speculate that the Wii could feasibly be released within the next few weeks. Perhaps by the end of the month.

Nintendo has also confirmed their reception of IBM's chip: "The first chips are in our possession," said Genyo Takeda, Senior Managing Director/General Manager, Integrated Research & Development Division, Nintendo Co., Ltd. "Today's milestone marks the final stage of our drive to reach both core and nontraditional gamers with an inviting, inclusive and remarkable gaming experience."

When I asked Martino about the power behind the Broadway chip, all he could do was compare it to the Wii's predecessor, the GameCube. "Compared to the Gekko in the GameCube, it's 20 percent more power efficient. It also performs significantly better. The key point is that it is Power Architecture-based and custom-made and optimized for Nintendo," he said. "This is a critical milestone for us at IBM. We have been very pleased with the entire development project."

I pressed Martino to compare Broadway to the other consoles they've had an integral part in developing for and he wouldn't budge, only commenting on what Nintendo was able to offer. With this news and Nintendo confirming the shipment of "6 million systems to retailers around the world between its launch in the fourth quarter of 2006 and the end of its fiscal year on March 31, 2007," we fully expect Nintendo to make an official announcement next week during their event in New York City. And as previously mentioned, we expect a release date far sooner than what has been projected.

ʽMajor next-gen console newsʼ turns out Wii related

Posted in General, Events by Chris on September 8th, 2006 at 8:01

Wii related and underwhelming. While most of you have read the article that Xboxic titled ʽHuge News coming soon?ʽ from Joystiq and some other major sites, you all probably have been wondering what this ʽhugeʼ news was all about. Well, sadly (like most gaming news thatʼs hyped up, i.e. notfornoobs.com) it was a huge disappointment.

The huge news was the fact that “IBM has begun shipping processors for Nintendoʼs Wii console..”. Thatʼs it. You read it correctly. Thanks guys. Thanks for that “Check back here at exactly 12:01EST to recieve some exciting news” news.

Joystiq does have the decency to explicitly apologize:

Instead of defusing the prolonged PR tease that Nintendo has been escalating for the past year, we contributed to it. Instead of doing our readers a service, we added more confusion to the situation. The post was vague and left only room for disappointment which, inevitably, came at 12:01.

Iʼm actually pretty tired of this crap. We all sort of knew in the back of our minds it would probably be a letdown, but a site like Joystiq would be too reliable for that. Right?

The apology continues:

The worst part is, we understand that it was our hard-earned credibility that contributed to this excitement cocktail. There are gaming websites that trade in hype, and weʼve always prided ourselves on avoiding it. If we tell you that something is “major” and “worth waiting for,” naturally you would expect it to be. As youʼve all no doubt noticed by now, news that IBM has begun shipping processors for Nintendoʼs Wii console, while potentially telling, is hardly the sort of megaton announcement we alluded to or fans were dreaming of. It became increasingly clear as the comments increased and the diggs increased, that we would reap what we had sown. Our credibility and reader trust are all we have, and we are taking measures immediately to ensure that we donʼt make this mistake again. Weʼre very sorry for the error in judgment.

While they did apologize and acknowledge there was an error in what they did, I really donʼt think it makes up for what they caused. The internet pretty much exploded with this ʽHUGEʼ news that was going to be announced. It got to the front page of Digg.com, with a current digg count of 837 which didnʼt help the snowball effect. I really like Joystiq actually, but if Xboxic pulled this kind of shit, weʼd sink in 12.01 seconds. Sorry that we reported on it, there are certain sources we simply donʼt doubt when they say thereʼs something big coming up.

Wii Controller Update

Devs gain access to the speaker and internal memory.

Nintendo has supplied updated Wii developer documentation to third parties making games for the new console, providing studios a means to access the controller's internal memory and speaker. This marks the first time that widespread documentation for these features has become available to third parties.

Studios tell us that the latest update further clarifies the functionality of the internal speaker, which was demonstrated by Nintendo for games like Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess at E3 2006. Apparently the Wii-mote provides a paltry 4,000 byte storage capacity that can be used to store controller settings and preferences. However, the Wii-mote's internal memory can only store saves for one game at a time. So, in practice, if a user saved their play style preferences for Metroid Prime 3: Corruption to the device, the information would be overwritten when they attempted to do the same thing for Excite Truck.

Nintendo warns developers not to disconnect or attach the nunchuck peripheral while data is being saved to the Wii-mote's internal memory, as it may become corrupted.

Doesn't sound like much, but the latest feed to studios arrives as good news because it means that third parties formerly unable to use the internal speaker and memory can access it now, which only bodes well for Wii's launch lineup and beyond.
