A number of big-name publishers are set to release their Wii games in mid-to-late October, which suggests that a system debut could not be that far off. And several insiders have told IGN that Tuesday, November 2 could, in fact, be the big day.

Thing is, not all of our contacts are in agreement on the date. Some have suggested that November 12 could, instead, by Wii's launch date. Regardless, though, it seems that Wii fans can look forward to their console sooner rather than later.

Sources suggest that Wii will launch with a $229 price tag and will be available in both black and white.

Insiders claim to have seen final hardware. The Broadway CPU is allegedly in the 750 CL line, a continuation of the 750 GX series. IBM may be working on a revised Broadway chip with a lower clock speed for a future Nintendo handheld -- presumably one that plays GameCube discs.

Nintendo has allegedly bumped production of Wii hardware to 5.5 million units by the end of the year, a significant upgrade to previous numbers. The jump is purportedly based on the positive reaction to Wii from press and industry analysts at E3 2006.

The console is unlikely to be region-free, although the lock is unrelated to hardware; a firmware update could theoretically allow gamers to play import software.

Confirmed: Prince of Persia Swinging to Wii

Last week Ubisoft delighted Nintendo fans by announcing it will support the launch of Nintendo Wii with seven titles, including entries from popular franchises Far Cry and Rayman. In the midst of all the news were hints -- largely from what looked to be announcements from Ubisoft France -- that Prince of Persia would also climb onto Nintendo's new console. The company's official press release, however, was distinctly Prince-free.

Will the sandy acrobatic scion make his way to the Wii or not? It turns out he will.

"I can confirm that a game based on the popular Prince of Persia franchise is one of many titles Ubisoft has in development for Nintendo's Wii," a spokesperson for Ubisoft told IGN today. "At this time we can not provide an official date for the game or any additional information about it."

According to the spokesperson, the Prince project was left off last week's announcement because it will not be a Wii launch title; the company does not have release timing or details for the game just yet.

Ubisoft previously stated that it has more, still unannounced titles in development for Nintendo's new generation console.

Of course, the Prince's sword-swinging, acrobatic moves could be an easy fit for the Wii controller, even if Ubisoft opts out of the controller-to-sword mapping it initially attempted with Red Steel.

Ubisoft will be showcasing some of its Wii titles at the Games Convention 2006 in Leipzig, Germany later this month. IGN will, of course, be on hand for up-to-date reports.

IGN Wii: What can gamers expect from the racer GT Pro Series? The game seems to be exclusive to Wii. How does it use the remote to better the racing experience and what sort of features, cars and options can we expect in the finished product?

Laurent Detoc: GT Pro Series is inspired by a Japanese game that was never released here and Ubisoft is optimizing for the Wii. It will have more than 80 licensed cars, tons of tuning options and fluid drift-style controls and physics. Talk about how the Wii changes the way you play games, we're working to include an accessory in GT Pro Series that will make this game a must have. Stay tuned, literally.

McGee: 'Wii is the only true next-gen console'

US games designer offers his forthright views on what the next generation will truly hold

Renowned US games designer American McGee has spoken out in a forthcoming interview with CVG, to lambast Microsoft and Sony as 'focused on money' before going on to describe Nintendo's Wii as the only true next-generation console.

In an extensive and forthright interview which will be appearing exclusively on CVG tomorrow, McGee, who's currently in the throes of releasing Bad Day LA as well as working on movie projects Grimm and Oz, responded to our question about the prospects for the next generation race by saying,

"The only truly next-gen console out there is the Wii. Everything else is just a video card and processor upgrade."

When quizzed further, McGee told us he thought that Nintendo would be the true next-generation champion for gamers adding, " I sense that Nintendo is going to capture the hearts of gamers while Microsoft and Sony stab each other in the neck for market domination. Nintendo is focused on innovation and games. The other guys are focused on making money."

Controversial views indeed, but McGee seems certain that Nintendo speaks to the true gamer's soul, while picturing the other two monolithic corporations as engaged in a massive bunfight not for gaming, but for cold hard cash. Harsh or right on the money? You can offer your own thoughts in our comments field, and be sure to tune back in tomorrow for the full and fascinating interview where McGee discusses US politicians' hostility to games, episodic content, outsourcing and where gaming's future truly lies.
