Xbox 360 sells 326,000 in USA; Call of Duty 2 tops software chart

The first independent figures regarding the launch performance of the Xbox 360 in North America have been released by the NPD Group, revealing that 325,902 consoles were sold by the end of November.

Shortages of the hardware at retail have held back Microsoft's console sales, which lag behind the early performance of the original Xbox - which sold 556,000 units in a comparable amount of time after launch back in 2001, despite direct competition from Nintendo's GameCube, launched only three days later.

 

However, the console has had an incredibly strong launch in software terms, with 1.27 million units of software shipping alongside those hardware units - representing a tie ratio of 3.9, far higher than the original Xbox tie ratio of 2.4.

Activision, in particular, will be delighted with this showing; Call of Duty 2 was far and away the most popular launch title for the Xbox 360, and with just over a quarter of a million sales, 77 per cent of all Xbox 360 purchasers brought home the game with their console.

Medal of Honor Goes 360?

EA says no, but release list suggests shooter's Xbox-bound.

 

 

Over the summer,GameSpot picked up on the the first details on Electronic Arts' launch-scheduled first-person-shooter for PlayStation 3,Medal of Honor Airborne. The game was never officially announced, but we've heard on good authority the game's in development, and would follow the story of a group of paratroopers in World War II.

 

The Medal of Honor series has been a multi-platform franchise for EA this entire generation, but Airborne seemed destined solely for PlayStation 3 - at least at the time. According to a GameStop release list obtained byGamers Reports, Medal of Honor Airborne is now scheduled for a November release on Xbox 360.

 

Gamers Reports has since taken the release list down at the request of EA. The company told 1UP they haven't discussed this title with retailers, and anything that's appearing on release lists isn't based on information EA has distributed. That doesn't mean the game isn't coming, but right now EA isn't talking about it, and the official line is that the GameStop release list isn't based on official information.

 

Nonetheless, considering the publisher's past multi-platform strategies, it's probably safe to say the World War II shooter franchise is headed to Xbox 360 eventually.

Wrestle Kingdom Xbox360 Screens

 

Gamewatch has posted some new screens from Wrestle Kingdom for the Xbox360. This game has some player models that look amazing. Even though this will never see a US release, the game certainly may be worth importing. The game is in its early stages, so there is some edge clipping and other graphical glitches. Anyone who sees this can hardly claim the Xbox360 is not a graphical powerhouse. Check out the player face maps especially.

Atari sends along a new info sheet and new screens from Timeshift for the XBox360. At least they claim the screens are from the Xbox360 version even though they are in the 4:3 aspect ratio. Who are we to argue....

MS denies it will release HD-DVD compatible 360 next year

 

Eurogamer report Microsoft says that it currently has no plans to release an xbox 360 equipped with a next-generation DVD player.

 

The unusually direct statement is a straightforward denial of a report from a Japanese news service yesterday, which claimed that the company planned to launch an HD-DVD compatible Xbox 360 in 2006.

 

Microsoft, in both America and Japan, has not announced anything regarding the possibility of a next generation DVD drive being placed in the Xbox 360, a Microsoft spokesperson told IGN. There are currently no plans to release an Xbox 360 equipped with a next generation DVD player.

 

Which is fair enough, although you do wish they'd make their minds up. Back in August, Bill Gates himself said: We are looking at whether future versions of Xbox 360 will incorporate an additional capacity of an HD-DVD player or something else.

 

And just last month, Microsoft's Japanese Xbox chief Yoshihiro Maruyama said, it's a possibility although he did add that it wouldn't have anything to do with games. If the Xbox 360 uses a next-generation DVD drive in the future, it will only be used for watching movies that run on next-generation DVDs, he said.
