What we heard: Upon reading McNealy's memo sent to analysts this AM, there was plenty to dig our teeth into. Aptly titled "Checking up on Xbox 360 Expectations," among the highlights was McNealy's belief the new console is "on track for a November launch," as well as his pick for price: $299, "with the 20-gig hard drive selling as a peripheral for somewhere in the range of $60-$99."

Xbox 360 game prices revealed

 

IT WOULD seem that whatever the worries about the price of the Xbox 360 console itself, the price of the launch titles might not be nearly as bad as the £45 we had been expecting.

 

Amazon.co.uk has begun listing Xbox 360 games for pre order with the prices at either £29.99 or £32.99. So far the only games listed are Call of Duty 2 - £29.99, Kameo: Elements of Power - £29.99, Perfect Dark Zero - £32.99, Quake 4 - £29.99, Tony Hawk's American Wasteland - £29.99 and GUN - £29.99.

 

The listings also give the release dates for the games, and whilst Amazon does guess a bit with these things they have Quake 4 and Tony Hawk's listed for release on October 28th, Call of Duty 2 listed for release on November 25th, GUN on November 11th, Perfect Dark Zero on December 2nd and Kameo on December 9th.

HD-DVD Support Waning

Xbox 360's future media format losing holiday momentum.

 

Microsoft has several times said Xbox 360 would feature a next-generation optical media before the end of its lifespan. Clearly the company won't support Sony's proprietary Blu-ray technology (PSP support in Xbox 360 or not), making Toshiba's HD-DVD the only other reasonable option.

 

Too bad it seems HD-DVD's losing some steam. The format was supposed to kick off into the retail channels this holiday season as part of a move to stay ahead of Blu-ray, but the Wall Street Journal reports several companies are backing off from their previous pledges of support.

 

Paramount Pictures was supposed to release more than 20 HD-DVD titles beginning in the fourth quarter, but sources have told the WSJ that isn't happening at all. NBC Universal, originally slated for 16 releases, has now shaved to 'about a dozen,' and Warner Home Video, a primary backer of HD-DVD, is issuing caution and keeping its plans tentative.

 

One of the primary concerns appears to be over a format war, which would confuse consumers and result in potentially sluggish sales and slower adoption rates to the new formats. "If there is a unification of formats, we would want to work toward that," said Jim Cardwell, president of Warner Home Video.

 

Supported launch or not, HD-DVD won't be aiming for the mainstream consumer when it arrives; the first players are expected to cost over $1,000. It's a wonder how Microsoft plans to eat the costs for that whenever it lands inside an Xbox 360.

However, one strong hint about the price point for Xbox 360 did emerge today from Microsoft itself - with a German language page on the company's own website fingering CHF 600.- as the value of the console.

 

The page, which describes a new initiative offering incentives to resellers who sell certain volumes of Microsoft software, notes that an Xbox 360 console worth 600 Swiss Francs is one of the bonuses on offer.

 

That translates roughly as 386 Euro, or GBP 264 - which is broadly in line with the upper end of price expectations for the Xbox 360.

 

Although the figure is likely to be a rough estimate more than anything else, it does still suggest that Microsoft may come in at 399 Euro or thereabouts for the Xbox 360 - probably translating as GBP 299 - adding fuel to speculation that the console may be priced at a level somewhat higher than Microsoft's last system was at launch.
