Korea-based online gaming giant NCsoft is preparing to launch titles on next-generation consoles, according to chief executive Tack Jin Kim, who confirmed to GamesIndustry.biz that development work is already underway.

 

The company, which is behind the world's largest massively multiplayer game series, Lineage, as well as titles including City of Heroes and Guild Wars, has until now focused exclusively on the PC platform.

 

However, Kim - who is founder and president as well as CEO of the firm - openly confirmed that the company is now "actively developing" for next-generation consoles, which he considers key to building the firm up in markets outside Korea.

NCsoft is already the largest gaming company in its native country, and its titles are proving a major draw at this week's G* games expo at the Kintex exhibition centre near the capital city, Seoul.

 

Kim did not discuss specifics of the company's development work on next-generation consoles, nor did he reveal which platforms the firm is working on - but sources close to NCsoft's European division revealed that Xbox 360 is not part of the company's plans at the moment, suggesting that the PS3 is the target platform for NCsoft's first console titles.

 

Speaking today at NCsoft's head offices in Seoul, Kim also confirmed to GamesIndustry.biz that a European development location is part of the firm's plan for the future, joining the company's other development studios - NC HQ Studios in Seoul, Guild Wars creators Arena.Net in California and Richard Garrtt's NC Austin Studio.

Earlier today I received a phone call from a source at one of the companies mentioned in my previous article. We had a very nice conversation regarding gaming and the next generation, and my original article on Grand Theft Auto being exclusive to the PlayStation 3.

PS3 May Cost Twice AS Much As The Xbox 360

 

Because of high priced hardware, the PS3 may cost twice as much as the Xbox 360

 

According to Merrill Lynch, because of the cost of hardware componets, the PS3 may cost twice as much as the Xbox 360 by the end of 2006. The report includes estimated breakdown of hardware costs by component and shipping predictions. Manufacturing costs has been the main factor.

 

The results of the report are based on the assumption that Sony will have to sell at a loss due to the estimated costs of hardware. However, if Sony is willing to be aggressive on pricing with PS3, the report conceeds that many of these numbers are likely to change.

PS3 cheaper than Xbox 360?

 

A large-scale survey of the Japanese public has shown that most believe Sony’s Playstation 3 and Microsoft’s Xbox 360 will be roughly equivalent in price.

 

40.9% of those surveyed replied that they believe the PS3’s price will fall somewhere in the ¥30,001 to ¥40,000 [uS $256.50 to $342.00] range.

 

The Xbox 360’s Japanese price tag of ¥39,795 [uS $340.00] is towards the upper end of this range, and 55.3% of respondents indicated that they felt this was too expensive.

 

Nintendo’s Revolution console is expected to have the lowest retail price: over half of the survey’s participants believe it will be priced from ¥20001 to ¥30000 [uS $171.00 to $256.50].

 

The PS3’s software is predicted to be most expensive of the three consoles: 41.1% say that games for the next gen console will cost between ¥7001 and ¥8000 [uS $60.00 to $68.00].

 

Xbox 360 games are tipped to be priced between ¥6001 and ¥7000 [uS $51.00 to $60.00], and Revolution games will cost much the same, with respondents more or less evenly split between a price range of ¥5001 to ¥6000 [uS $43.00 to $51.00], and ¥6001 to ¥7000 [uS $51.00 to $60.00].
