G71 is the Playstation 3 RSX chip

 

NVIDIA CALLS its 90 nanometre graphic core of Playstation 3, RSX. This

graphic chip is set to work at 550MHz and Nvidia can guarantee that a million

chips will work at this speed as it's not that challenging at this process level.

Nvidia can obviously make G70 work fine at 550MHz but it can not ship

millions of those chips, more likely tens of thousands.

 

When it comes to Playstation RSX we have every reason to believe that this

chip is already taped out, as Nvidia plans to have G71 in Q1 2006 already. We

expect to see some of these cards even before CeBIT in March 2006.

 

We managed to confirm that we can actually talk about RSX, as it's G71 and

vice versa. Sony just wants millions of chips and it can get them at 90

nanometre. When it comes to graphic performance, the RSX can process 24

pixels with its 24 pipelines while an Xbox 360 powered with ATI's Xenos, R500

chip can do no more no less than double, 48 pixels per clock.

 

When it comes to G71 as a graphic chip, Nvidia will get that chip to insane

speeds and we expect at least 650 to 700MHz for the cherry picked top of

the range.

 

Best of all, Sony and Nvidia can position the Geforce 7800 GTX with 512MB to

be the performance estimates of RSX chips but we doubt that RSX will have

memory working at an insane 1700MHz plus.

 

Remember RSX is here to stay for at least five more years and it has to go

down to 65 nanometre and 45 in next few years to make it cheaper to

produce.

Έχεις δίκιο σε αυτό που λές, αλλά καμιά φορά όπου υπάρχει καπνός

υπάρχει και φωτιά...... ;)

Γι' αυτό το postara το αρθρο, συν οτι κάτι αναφέρει και στο ps3-live, αλλά

δεν μπορώ να καταλάβω πολλά και κυρίως τις πηγές του, λόγω κακής μετάφρασης

απο το babelfish....

The Official Playstation Magazine reported that Sony has decided not to use a central online gaming service like Xbox Live for the PS3. Instead the PS3 online service will be similar to what we have today on the PS2.

 

This will come as bad news for many who had hoped for a unified system similar to Microsoft’s Xbox Live, which are one of the main selling points for the new Xbox 360. This means that gamers still have to keep track of multiple online accounts, and that it will be up to each and every publisher to decide what kind of online features their games will have. Though this gives the publisher more freedom, and could be an advantage for some games, many of us have been hoping for a unified online service for the PS3 and it can be somewhat hard to understand Sony’s decision, especially after Nintendo finally also have shown interest for online gaming. However, how this strategy will work out for Sony will first be known when the console is out, and it could prove to be less of a problem than many of us think.

SONY Computer Entertainment is likely to abandon its practice of region coding games for its PlayStation 3 console, the head of its South Pacific operation said.

 

Sony's current crop of PlayStation and PlayStation 2 consoles contains technology that blocks the use of illegal copied games. It also prevents the use of game and DVD discs that have been region coded for other markets.

 

However, Sony Computer Entertainment Australia managing director, Michael Ephraim, said the company was unlikely to continue the policy as international television standards emerge.

 

"If you look at the fact that it will support high-definition TV, which will be a global standard, there's a good likelihood that it will be global region, as for example we've done with the PSP (PlayStation Portable)," Mr Ephraim said.

PS3 to hit Japan in March?

 

Sony expects to launch PS3 in Japan next March, and in the US in the

autumn, with a price tag of $300-$400 (around £170-£230).

 

Sony also plans to unveil a compact video device "to fill the time gap before

PlayStation 3 launches in Japan in March and in the US a year from now,"

HollywoodReporter.com has revealed.

 

Howard Stringer, Sony's CEO, stated that "PS3 will be bundled with a

selection of preloaded films, TV programmes and games, and will sell for

between $300-$400" in an interview with the website.

 

While none of these launch details have been officially announced by Sony, it

is becoming apparent that PS3 is central to the electronics giant's plans for

its next wave of technology, as it will be compatible with the company's

digital cameras, MP3 players and PSP.

 

Stringer described it as "a high-definition value chain that starts with cameras

and goes through projectors and television sets and ends up with PS3".

No pre-owned games to be allowed for Playstation 3

A PATENT may allow Sony to ensure that no game would be playable from any console other than the one in which it was first read.

 

Joystiq is reporting that this patent is the source of the many rumours that will mean as much to gamers as DRM is for music fans.

 

The technology would allow an authentication code to be read and then rendered unreadable, making the software unplayable on any machine but the one which first read it.

 

But this has caused considerable backlash from the gaming community. While many are aware of the double profit companies make on pre-owned games, this would ensure the death of trading games between friends and even going to a friend's house to play a little multiplayer.

 

No less than Ken Kataguri himself is listed among the inventors, which makes it look like this is a move that came from very high up. It has already been pointed out that many Playstation users have had to replace their console, surely this would leave us high and dry in that event.

 

While the PS3 hasn't been expressly mentioned in the patent in English or Japanese it would be the obvious place to employ this new technology, regardless of how little gamers will appreciate it. Between this and the DRM scandal, Sony could be looking at a serious drop in interest in the PS3. You can be sure you'll see more on this as it develops. As gamers, we can only hope that modern technology won't undermine the tried and tested barter system
