Blu-ray rollout delayed

First wave of films for new format bumped from May to June to coincide with release date for first Blu-ray player.

Sony's HD era of Blu-ray discs will be ushered in a month late, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The trade paper is reporting today that Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has delayed its first batch of eight titles from the previously announced May 23 release date back to June 20.

The article quotes Sony Pictures Home Entertainment president Benjamin Feingold as saying the delay came at the request of the studio's retail and hardware partners, who wanted a more coordinated launch for the format. The new date means the discs will hit store shelves much closer to the first commercially available Blu-ray player, a Samsung model that isn't expected in stores until June 25.

Video Business Online has previously reported that the first wave of Blu-ray releases from Lionsgate, which were also originally scheduled for May 23, have been moved back to a June 27 release.

SEGA's E3 line-up

Having spent most of the last week or so announcing a game every day, SEGA's articulated its whole E3 line-up - filling in a couple of fairly obvious gaps.

Since we've already written about most of the games, there doesn't seem much point going over familiar ground so, instead, let's do one of those lists of titles affairs - that's always fun on a Friday afternoon.

SEGA's E3 line-up in full (except for the things they haven't announced yet, obviously, and they haven't announced a few things yet - promise):

Atari's E3 line-up

Atari's outlined the obvious bits of its E3 schedule, but is certainly reserving a few announcements for the show itself.

Headlining the list sent out today are the likes of Alone in the Dark (X360), Test Drive Unlimited (X360/PC) and Neverwinter Nights 2 (PC).

Also on the list is a strong line-up of PSP titles consisting of BattleZone, Warioware-style HOT PXL and Dungeons & Dragons: Tactics.

Atari followers (if such things exist) can also expect to see Arthur and the Minimoys (PS2/PSP/DS/GBA/PC), Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2 (PS2/Wii) and Super DBZ (PS2) on Atari's stand.

Plus some other stuff, which we'll probably hear about soon. Wink.

Pre-E3 2006: Call of Duty 3 Official

World Premiere! Activision confirms new sequel for next-gen consoles.

With E3 headed our way just after the weekend, we knew we had to leave our readers with something promising while they wait for the big show. With that in mind, we've been granted permission from Activision to announce that Call of Duty 3 is headed to next-generation consoles this fall (that's 2006, folks). Here's the official line provided to us by Activision for the announcement:

"Through the eyes of four Allied soldiers, Call of Duty 3 brings players closer to the fury of combat as they fight through the Normandy Breakout, the harrowing offensive that liberated Paris and changed the fate of the world. Developed by Treyarch, Call of Duty 3 is the follow up to the #1 next-generation game and is scheduled for a 2006 release."

So which systems does "next-generation" really mean? According to the end credits of the official trailer, logos for Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo's machines have all been included -- which makes it obvious as to where the game is going.

Speaking of the trailer, Included below is the official E3 teaser that will appear at the show next week. Click the image above to check it out.

We'll be back with more at the show.

PS3 Dev Unit Pics

The headline says it all. See what developers are using today to build tomorrow's games.

With the Electronics Entertainment Expo 2006 set to kick off next week, Sony has started to ship out PlayStation 3 development units to more and more software houses. The PS3 kits are big, bulky and extremely loud, according to studio sources.

An American spy was kind enough to hook us up with a couple of photos showing off the PS3 development kits as they've never been seen publicly before. As readers can ascertain in the pics we've provided, these babies sport a design that would make even Betamax players envious. Also, note all of the USB and dip-switches on the units.

Unfortunately, there is no sign of the flux-capacitor that makes "4D" gaming possible on PS3, but surely it's contained somewhere within these gi-normous units.

[begin Clip]

Snake: War has changed.

Snake: Our time has ended.

Snake: Our war is over.

Campbell: Since the Manhattan incident, restrictions on military invention in foreign countries have eased, fueling demand for mercenaries..

Campbell: Today, the world's wars depend largely on PMCs, private military companies whose business includes supplying these mercenaries.

Campbell: PMCs have become a serious threat to the world.

Snake: The U.S. has exported too much of its military power. Now she's paying the price.

Campbell: In total, they've got enough manpower to rival the U.S. military.

Campbell: Based on our investigation, the five largest PMCs are run by a dummy corporation, which acts a single mother company.

Snake: And the mother company...?

Campbell: Outer Heaven.

Snake: The one world in which soldiers will always have a place.

[End Clip]

Pre-E3 2006: The Wall - First Look

It's time to blow stuff up... future stuff!

The plot and gameplay features of Play Ten Interactive's "The Wall" need to be clarified a bit. Rewritten since first being unveiled via an official E3 "First Look" press release, The Wall is not the game the public originally thought it was. In fact, we got the scoop directly from Play Ten representatives themselves, and they offer a much more complete picture of what the PC and PS3 title is really supposed to be.

To start, the confusion of who the developer is has been clarified. Reported as a product of both Burut and World Forge, the correct answer is that they're one in the same (World Forge, of Sparta: Ancient Wars fame, is an offshoot of the UberSoldier guys at Burut CT). Also, the story is much different than originally thought as well. It's no longer a murder mystery set in a small town that eventually gets invaded by aliens, but rather, a futuristic cyberpunk shooter set in an era far from our own. You see, nearly 300 years ago a devastating disaster known as "Earth's Wrath" decimated the planet. Continents shifted position, oceans came and went, volcanoes blew their tops, and mountains were completely leveled. Out of the destruction, new nations and conflicts quickly sprung up until eventually uniting under a single government that rules the entire planet.

Additional story details are still being kept a secret, but in the game players will assume the role of a hero who has been recruited by "The Resistance." Not all is as it seems, though, and before long the true intentions of both the hero and the resistance comes to light and things get a little... complicated. Having four equally-powerful factions embroiled in a power struggle with one another makes things even more interesting.

Despite the fact that The Wall is heavy on the back-story, its main focus is the gameplay. The emphasis is specifically geared towards the single-player experience, but multiplayer modes (Deathmatch, CTF, Conquest, etc) have also been included. As an interesting side feature, the multiplayer option also gives users the option to script their MP experience to their own tastes (how extensive that gets, though, is still a mystery).

With single-player taking center stage, Play Ten and Burut are working on a number of interesting features to help capture gamers' attention. One of the more noticeable elements includes highly-destructible environments with numerous break points. Objects, parts of buildings, entire buildings, and other sections of the play area can be gradually and fully destroyed. The amount of destruction is entirely dependant on the type of weapon being used to create it too. An example that Play Ten uses to illustrate this is that a tree won't be seriously damaged by a pistol, but a rocket launcher will take care of it quite nicely. This sort of destruction isn't just for looks, though -- use can do things like destroy catwalk supports to knock enemies down from snipe points as well.

But there are a couple of other nice little features still worth mentioning. The addition of squad members with specific personalities are one such inclusion, as is an RPG-like ranking system that affects how people react to the hero. Missions are non-linear too and like other open-ended games before it, The Wall will give users the option to take on primary and bonus missions that affect the ultimate outcome of the story. Customizable weapons and drivable vehicles are also planned, but details on those are being saved for another time.

Thus far, The Wall certainly sounds like something worth checking out and hopefully we'll be able to provide a more detailed explanation next week from the show floor when we see it in action. Check back then.
