Playstation 3 To Be Fat And Retarded

 

The PS3 launch looks bleaker and bleaker. We already reported that, yes, Sony will have no bananas — or rather, PS3s — at E3 this year. But a couple more insidious rumors about the PS3 are going around.

 

The first rumor is that, currently, the innards of a Playstation 3 are too large to functionally fit in the case. Although fat people can suck in their massive guts or cram fists fulls of cellulite down into a slimming girdle, no such option exists for the PS3, meaning that either the sleek and empty cases theyʼve been showing off will have to grow larger to accommodate the electronic bulk or the components themselves will have to shrink… and soon.

 

The second rumor? Sony is still bidding on components. As Inquirer states: “This means the development is far from final, and it will be debugging up to, and in a Microsoft overheating manner, past the last minute. Not a good sign.”

 

The last bit of bleakness is the rather astounding news that the OS that the PS3 will be running on will consume 25% of the systemʼs core and 18.75% of the system RAM! Holy crap! Donʼt we buy consoles so we donʼt have to deal with that sort of OS overhead?

This news is dissapointing.

 

In the dawn of the PS3, the system specs were all powerful. The allmighty Cell processor has 8 SPEs and would take advantage of other Cell processors on the network, such as those in your TV. It was kind of like Devastator, the processors combining to become even more powerful.

 

Then we find out that Sony is having trouble making Cell chips with 8 working SPEs. So the PS3 is promised to only have 7 working SPEs for each system.

 

Today we find out that the OS will always consume an SPE and has the right to abduct another when necessary. This reduces the potential number of SPEs that a developer can reliably count on for a game to use at all times is reduced to 5.

 

The true power of the PS3 keeps being reduced the closet to launch it becomes. Additional features have already been dropped. How many more will evaporate before the PS3 becomes a real device you can go to the store and buy?

To Kotaku έτσι γράφει συχνά ... του αρέσει αυτό το στύλ αλλά όσοι έχουν λίγο μυαλό καταλαβαίνουν πότε κάνει "πλάκα" , και δεν τα αναφέρουν σαν κάτι ουσιαστικό.

Cell Designer Shares Thoughts on PS3

 

Summary: Cell designer has a few choice words for John Carmack

 

Full:

 

H. Peter Hofstee, one of the chief IBM architects behind Sony's Cell processor, spoke at a technical lecture on Wednesday night in Austin, Texas.

 

Hofstee shed light on several interesting facets of the Cell's design. For instance, the PS3's Cell chip "is almost exactly the same [physical] size...as the first chip that went into the PlayStation 2."

 

But Hofstee didn't ignore the fact that some programmers are frustrated by the Cell chip's unusual, challenging architecture. "I think the biggest problem is to find ways to make it effective for the programmers," Hofstee said.

 

Next Generation asked Hofstee for his take on legendary Doom/Quake programmer John Carmack's recent statements on the PS3's Cell processor; Carmack recently called the Cell chip a "pain in my ass." Hofstee responded by saying that Carmack "didn't give me very many reasons why he feels that way."

 

Hofstee's final take on Carmack: "I got the impression that [Carmack] is just someone who likes PCs more."

Απλά τα demo με τα παπάκια, τα ψάρια κλπ, δείχνουν την τρομερή δύναμη του cell να χειρίζεται εκατοντάδες πράγματα σαν ξεχωριστές οντότητες με τέλεια αλληλεπίδραση μεταξύ τους και ταυτόχρονα στο κάθε περιβάλλον.

 

Αν το βάλουνε στα παιχνίδια θα δούμε πλέον στρατιώτες πχ που όχι μόνο θα παθαίνουν ρεαλιστικά , αλλά και θα φέρονται ξεχωριστά ο καθένας ανάλογα με το προγραμματισμό που θα έχει .
