This Week in Europe: PS3 Launch Reaction

 

SCEE representatives - including company president David Reeves as well as retailers and the press have all been offering their opinions on the November launch of PS3, to MCV, Europe's top game industry resource...

 

Sony will give Europe equal billing with the US and Japanese launches of PS3, according to SCEE president David Reeves.

 

"The US, Japan and Europe will be equally served," he told MCV. "It's my job to make sure Europe gets equal billing. I can't specify the numbers but we'll work hard to ensure that it's equal." In the past Europe has been forced to wait for hardware such as PS2 and PSP.

 

He added, "Europe is on track and I think the third party publishers should recognize that. But for us, we'll have four to six [first party] titles at launch."

 

Euro Shortages Predicted

 

Meanwhile, SCEE UK boss Ray Maguire says the November launch is almost guaranteed to lead to hardware shortages. "We might have expected to go as late as next spring in Europe so to launch in November is great for retail in particular," he said.

 

"PAL has emerged in the last few years as more important as a whole because of its growth, and it's natural that you cut up stock in proportion to market share. PAL presents more difficulties as you've got over 100 territories and localization issues to deal with, but we've done it before so we know how to deal with it."

 

He added, "Of course the launch is important but we are looking at a long term business plan. It is impractical to believe you can fulfill every single order. But we are going to do the best job we can to deliver what we hope will be a world beating console."

Retailers Speak

 

"There's no going back for Sony. Its executives have put their reputations on the line and now they're under pressure to make sure the launch happens in November - no matter how much stock is available." - Gerry Berkley; Woolworths.

 

"I was not expecting a worldwide launch. This is great news and it's great to have such good visibility of when we're going to see the machine." - Martyun Gibbs; Gamestation.

Journalist Reaction

 

Edge editor Tony Mott said the delay would not be a problem for Sony, comparing Microsoft's one-year lead to that of Sega's back in the days of Dreamcast. He wrote, "Did it not suffer horribly because so many people wanted to wait for better technology running better games?"

 

He added, "Microsoft would be better served if Sony was somehow able to bring its hardware to market sooner rather than later because then PS3 would be launching with fewer, less polished games thereby enabling Xbox 360 to shine."
