Worch had little to say about the actual game he has been working on – now titled Lair – though he used the models all throughout the lecture. One of the key models was a maquette (built by Peter Konig at Massive Black, the man behind the Dragonheart models); another, a digital render. The final version used in the game, Worch said, was a blend of the best parts from each: a practical body and limbs, and a digital head, tail, and wings. He played a recent extremely high-resolution trailer in real-time, occasionally pausing to swing the camera around or turn on or off various effects. To be fair, the scene in question was clearly a cut-scene, calculated to show off just how many polygons the PS3 can throw around; it's still a lot of polygons, though. Each model, Worch claimed, contained somewhere between 100,000 and 170,000 triangles. Each had a bunch of other special maps and lighting applied, and the main character was built up with "over ten textures". He compared this to an estimated 10,000 for characters in Gears of War and other recent high-res games. According to the November issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly (#197), Sony may be waiting until “right before the Xbox 360 goes on sale this November” to “unveil its grand online plans (including user transactions, multimedia functions, and a bunch of other fancy-schmancy features).” If true, the announcement may come later than next week’s PS3 entertainment festival, but it would certainly be used as another means to parry the arrival of the 360 in many parts of the world. Sony has apparently already confirmed a comparable service back at E3, but further details have been hard to come by. Sony’s been dragging its feet for a while now with an excuse that it wants a unified online service to cover not only the PS3, but the PSP (and possibly PS2) as well. This initial investment, according to this insider source, is "nothing but a nightmare for many Japanese software development companies." The article also reveals that the prevailing rumor in Japanese game development circles is that many companies may end up developing for the Xbox 360, which will lower R&D costs since the system shares many similarities with Windows game development, allowing developers to release a single title on both platforms. Could Sonyʼs ambitious plans for the PlayStation 3 scare small game developers away and push them to towards Xbox 360 development?
