The web site Next-Generation reveals that Sony is, supposedly, planning to launch an online games service, largely modeled on Xbox Live, currently called PlayStation HUB. They also say that the company might launch the PS3 console on September 16th in Japan and September 21st in North America.

According to well-placed industry sources, PlayStation HUB will offer PlayStation 3 owners much the same services as Xbox Live, including chat, downloadable demos, independent games and online play. It's a departure from PlayStation 2's online strategy, widely regarded as vastly inferior to Microsoft's.

 

PlayStation HUB is being described to developers as a 'subscriber service' suggesting a monthly charge. We understand the service is being created by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, although this is unconfirmed.

 

September launch

 

Developer sources are also suggesting that PlayStation 3 is currently scheduled to launch in September. A launch games release schedule seen by our sources states a September launch. Although the schedule does not explicitly state a hardware launch date, nor a launch territory, we understand Japan and U.S will both see the machine in September.

 

Some in the industry have taken this as a lead to speculate that September 16 would be a launch date in Japan (a Saturday before a national holiday) followed by September 21 in the U.S. These dates are not confirmed.

 

A spokesperson for SCEA said the company does not comment on rumors. However, we understand Sony is preparing to announce HUB some time in the next few weeks.

Bain to talk PS3 at IGDA event

 

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe development support manager George Bain is to deliver a speech on developing games for the PS3 at an event in London next week.

 

The IGDA event, which will be hosted by recruitment agency Mary-Margaret, will see Bain offering insight into the challenges and opportunities for game development on Sony's next-generation console.

 

The technical presentation will serve as an introduction to the PS3, offering an overview of the system architecture, the Cell proccesor and new graphics processor (RSX) plus a discussion of the Blu-Ray storage medium.

 

A well known face in the development community, Bain has been working for SCEE since 1997 and manages the developer support team - providing support services for all SCEE partners, development studios and affiliated software production firms. In addition to his multiple on-site visits and in-house consultancy, he has presented at numerous venues for other local IGDA chapters, GDCE, AGDC, KRI and SCE Developer Conferences.

 

The event will take place at O'Neill's "Irish" pub in London's Kings Cross on Wednesday, 22nd February. Entry is free of charge.

Zipper hiring for next-gen project

 

Longtime SOCOM developer looking for people to work on a "large-scale multiplayer game on a next-generation console."

 

With Sony's recent acquisition of Zipper Interactive, it was a safe bet the SOCOM series developer was going to be put to work on a project for the mammoth publisher's highly anticipated PlayStation 3.

 

Freshly updated job postings on Zipper's official Web site confirm as much. Among other positions, the developer is looking for a senior server engineer to develop "server side components for a large-scale multiplayer game on a next-generation console." A senior network engineer is sought to develop client-side components for the same, while other positions make more generic references to development on a next-generation platform.

 

Given that Zipper's last four titles have all carried the SOCOM label, a PS3 installment of the tactical military shooter seems like a no-brainer, and certainly could fit the description of a "large-scale multiplayer game." A Sony representative gave GameSpot the ol' "neither confirm nor deny" treatment when asked about the possibility of a Zipper-developed PS3 SOCOM. According to the representative, "As a wholly owned subsidiary of SCEA, Zipper will be exploring development across all brands of the PlayStation family but a title for PS3 has not been announced."

Well, you'll get it in the form of a newly confirmed PS3 God of War title, which we have to say has us salivating in utter delight because its PS2 debut was absolutely cracking - we can't wait to swing Kratos' chains in anger all over again on Sony's next-gen machine. God of War PS3 may not actually make it to E3, but is apparently well into development; and interestingly, both it and SOCOM 4 will also be appearing on PS2, underlining Sony's commitment to its favoured current-gen son for the next few years.
