TGS 2005: Eyes-on New Warhawk Trailer

New trailer reveals possible gameplay details.

 

 

September 16, 2005 - As part of its revolving list of trailers at the 2005 Tokyo Game Show, Sony Computer Entertainment unveiled a brand new teaser from its upcoming flight action title from Incognito known as Warhawk. The follow-up to 1996's PlayStation one title of the same name, Warhawk is very pretty hover-shooter that looks like it'll be played much in the same way it was the first time -- as a third and first-person cockpit blaster with attackers coming from every imaginable angle in a 3D space.

 

In the trailer on display in the PlayStation 3 Theater, it wasn't exactly clear if what we saw was actual in-game footage, or a mock-up of what gameplay would eventually be like ala the Killzone PS3 trailer shown earlier this year. Nonetheless, the video did imply that players can expect to take on multiple futuristic aircraft all at once while using a large red targeting HUB to help shoot the multiple bogies down. If you've ever played the original Warhawk or Sony's great Colony Wars series, then you'll know exactly what kind of game Warhawk PS3 appears to be as well.

Just like every other PS3 game trailer we've seen, the video of Warhawk was visually impressive. A huge number of craft were all on the screen at the same time and had plenty of detail to go along with them. The environments were equally detailed, but exactly original, as it amounted to little more than a sea-based landscape with lots of clouds and enemies but not much else. Even so, it looked great.

TGS 2005: Genji PS3 Named

 

September 16, 2005 - Sony Japan has given the PlayStation 3 version of its upcoming Genji sequel (first revealed at the PS Meeting this past July) a semi-official moniker. Though it's nothing fancy, the game is now known as "Genji 2." At the very least, it answers the question of how far ahead in the franchise that the new game is going to be -- clearing up rather quickly whether or not there will be another Genji game on the PS2 before all is said and done.

Kojima Proves MGS4 is Real

Still don't believe MGS4 is running in real-time? Think again.

 

To quiet any disbelievers, and to give TGS showgoers a sense of how powerful the PS3 hardware really is, Hideo Kojima held a special presentation today to prove the authenticity of his recent Metal Gear Solid 4 trailer. In a demonstration at the Konami booth, Kojima, along with MGS4 character designer Yoji Shinkawa, played the trailer -- and then interacted with it in real time.

 

The two paused the trailer and focused on Snake's face... and then started to pan the camera around him, proving once and for all that the footage contained in the trailer is real time and not prerendered CG. Not that there was any doubt in the minds of most, but seeing the interaction with the lifelike Snake character was truly impressive. Also neat to see where the adjustments of levels that changed everything from the level of bloom lighting to the color of Snake's skin.

 

At one point in his presentation Kojima even showed a special video message from Sony's Ken Kutaragi, who thanked Kojima for making such a great showcase for his new hardware. It's also worth noting that Kojima had a PS3 test machine (which looked like a slightly oversized PC) on the stage with him to generate the real-team video footage.
