Hi ppl,

No we are not going to sent you invitations for gmail, this post is a bit more on the conspiracy arena rather than a story based on actual hard evidence.

Did any of you actualy took the time to consider what is the impact of those gmail invitations? Especialy when gmail was in beta stages, unless you knew someone that allready had an account was impossible to get a gmail account. Based on this fact i tryed to figure out what will be the benefit of google by this.

Keeping in mind the following questions
a) What is the benefit of such invitations?
 who had the first google account?
c) Who sent the first invitation
d) how did he/she got that account?

Logic came first and answered the first question, with "hey they wanted to test the system with a limited number of users". Sounded right, i've done that more than once to test projects before publish them, however trying to figure out the rest of the questions the only logical answers kinda made me worry.

Who had the first account? Logic says probly one of the inside people of google (probly one of the developers etc). This means that the first invitation must have been send by the personel of google.

But how can this be bad?

Consider the following.
You send an invitation (usualy to a friend or someone you know allready). Your friend signs for an account. As many of you that have allready got an invitation know the first address in your address book is the one who invited you. Which means the link between you and your friend is now known...

Now imagine the same example in a global world wide view. Google did what no-one else could.
A World Wide tree with the invitation paths. You invite a friend, the friend another etc etc.

It might not seem so bad at the first glance, since the same "tree" could be done by simply monitoring "FROM" and "TO" fields of mails send through their systems. But this invitation thing offers something the FROM/TO cannot, it offeres less false possitives.

What those false possitives are? If you sent/receive a mail to a mailing list(s) they only can figure out that you're interested in the subject that those mailing lists focus. SPAM is another problem that increases the false possitives, in terms of if you receive a spam from an unknown host then the link between you and the spammer is a false one.

So now google knows all your search's, your mails and who your friends are with an extreme accuracy. Marketing departments love this kind of crap, they will create general profiles and group them based on the tree. Besides the fact that they currently have a user link tree of milions of users all over the world, i urgue you to prove me wrong, but i believe this is one of the largest marketing lists anyone will be able to get his hands on. And ofcourse lets not forget the goverments that would just DIE to get this tree into their hands.

So next time a friend asks you if you need an invitation tell him to go fuck him self  Sent your invitations to totaly irellevant people to you, complete strangers etc. This wont keep you covered but at least will create some structural problems .

Μια από τα ίδια. Υπάρχουνε άλλοι τρόποι για να φτιάξεις spam lists οι οποίοι λειτουργούνε περίφημα. Σιγά μην περιμέναν το google για να τις φτιάξουνε! Βέβαια το όλο θέμα με τα invitations όπως το περιγράφει προφανώς και ισχύει αλλά τα υπόλοιπα τώρα...
