Rumor Control UPDATE: Xbox 360 revealed (sort of...again)

Also this week: Revolution's E3 no-show, Ninja Gaiden Black, WebTV 360, and the PSP's processor.

 

RUMOR #3: The Xbox 360 will come in a $299 basic and $399 premium model.

 

What we heard: The last week saw forums aplenty erupt with word that the PSP had been underclocked as to allow for a longer battery life. According to one Australian's blog--which, for reasons that will never be adequately explained by God or science--that surfaced this week, "The CPU core is currently locked to a maximum clock speed of 222MHz, and the bus (typically operating at half the CPU speed) is locked to a top speed of 111MHz... The advantage of having configurable clock speeds in a portable device is that power consumption can be controlled by adjusting the clock speed to the demands of the software at any given moment." What's wrong with that? Well when Sony announced it last year, the PSP had a processor speed of 333 MHz. And, as pointed out by GameSpot Hardware's PSP 101 FAQ back in February, "The [PSP] system throttles down the CPU speed to conserve power. Software developers tell us that 222MHz is the current magic number for the CPU."

 

Bogus or not bogus?: Not bogus, but not news either.

Few more details tell us the doublelayer-DVD (DVD9) player will have a 12x speed and it confirms the ourcolony mem. card image that the default memory card will be 64MB.

The article says the console should be released within the next 6 months in USA/CAN and in Europe only 7-10 days later. Japan will get the Xbox360 in December 2005. Microsoft will release the console with 10-16 games ready and 40 titles within the first quarter. Halo 3 is confirmed aswell, should be released within 1year. The price of the Xbox360 will be announced this autumn.

Other nice details (thx to the danish people in our forum for translating!):

* The Xbox360 will not run at full power when watching movie DVDs so the console will make less noise.

* The controllers will have the rumble feature.

* You can transfer data from your iPod and digital camera.

* It will have Media Center Extender functionality.

* The 'Xbox360 Logo button' (Ring of light), will allow you to switch between your game and Xbox Live. If you received an Xbox Live messages, the logo will light up. It will also indicate which port/channel-number your controller is using.

* Release games: Perfect Dark Zero, PGR3 and Kameo (atleast)

* Webcam spotted in this picture will have a resolution of 1280.

*You can charge the controller batteries by connecting the controller via USB-cable with your Xbox360. You can also use simple retail batteries.
