O Thunderbird είναι ο δωρεάν και open source ( λογισμικό ανοιχτού κώδικα ) e-mail και news client του Mozilla Foundation. Ακολουθούσε κοινή στρατηγική με τον Firefox και η πρώτη του έκδοση κυκλοφόρησε στις 7 Δεκεμβρίου του 2004. Τις πρώτες 3 μέρες έφτασε τα 500 χιλιάδες downloads και σε 10 μέρες ξεπέρασε το 1 εκατομμύριο. Σήμερα ο Thunderbird συγκεντρώνει πάνω από 20 εκατομμύρια χρήστες αλλά το μέλλον του πλέον είναι αβέβαιο.

Ο μη κερδοσκοπικός οργανισμός Mozilla Foundation αποφάσισε να σταματήσει την ανάπτυξη του Thunderbird! Η επίσημη ανακοίνωση θα γίνει τη Δευτέρα αλλά διέρρευσε εσωτερικό e-mail από τον Jb Piacentino, Managing Director του Thunderbird προς τους εγγεγραμμένους Mozillians. Στο εκτενές αυτό e-mail o Jb Piacentino εξηγεί τους λόγους που οδήγησαν τον οργανισμό σε αυτή την απόφαση άλλα και ποιο θα είναι το μέλλον του e-mail client. In summary, we’ve been focusing efforts towards important web and mobile projects, such as B2G, while Thunderbird remains a pure desktop-only email client. We have come to the conclusion that continued innovation on Thunderbird is not the best use of our resources given our ambitious organizational goals. The most critical needs for the product are on-going security and stability for our 20+ million users.

We're not "stopping" Thunderbird, but proposing we adapt the Thunderbird release and governance model in a way that allows both ongoing security and stability maintenance, as well as community-driven innovation and development for the product. This will mean an eventual shift in how we staff Thunderbird at Mozilla Corporation - we are still working out details, but some people will likely end up on other Mozilla projects.
